Want to make your backyard more watershed-friendly? 🌧️🌿

Small changes on your property can help manage stormwater, reduce runoff, and improve local water quality.

Practices that increase water absorption into the ground and reduce hard, impervious surfaces can help protect streams, reduce flooding, and recharge groundwater.

Headed to a Memorial Day picnic or cookout? 🇺🇸

Keep the weekend fun by making food safety part of the plan. From prep to cleanup, focus on keeping foods at safe temperatures, preventing cross-contamination, and practicing good hygiene.

Keep cold foods at 40°F or below, hot foods at 140°F or above, and don’t leave food out for more than two hours (or one hour if it’s 90°F+).

Use separate utensils for raw and cooked foods, and always wash your hands.

Visit the Extension website and ask Tilva your food safety questions before the holiday weekend: ai.extension.psu.edu

Wondering when your apples are ready to harvest? 🍎 A starch-iodine test can help determine fruit maturity by showing how starches are converting to sugars as apples ripen.

When iodine is applied to a cut apple, starch turns blue-black while sugar-rich areas remain unstained. The pattern of starch loss can help indicate maturity, and each cultivar is a little different.
