History was made last week at Governors State University (GSU) when eight African-American women received their doctoral degrees. Despite funding difficulties, GSU continues to grow and recently established an innovative Interdisciplinary Leadership Doctorate Program that was rated in the nation's Top Online Doctorate Degrees in Education for 2016. The program is unique in that it has four specializations: Superintendent (PK-12), Public Safety, Higher Education Administration, and Social Entrepreneurship (Nonprofit). These eight women are part of its second graduating class.

The names of the new graduates are: Tiffany Gethers, Nakee Holloway, Shaniqua Jones, Iyana Mason, Okeycha Pettigrew, Carla Peterson, Lisa Wallace, and Kimberly Wesley. Individually, these women have met formidable challenges on their paths to a doctorate, and they are collectively writing a book about their journeys. Their stories include overcoming domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, r**e, homelessness, poverty, cancer, and other heart-rending experiences. In addition to these extraordinary circumstances, the women juggled the daily struggles of jobs, family, and financial stress. To weather their storms, they networked together and created a "sisterhood" of support. These amazing women are Chicago's future leaders. Each one represents a story of resilience, inspiration, and hope. We are proud to have these women as GSU alum.

GSU School Counseling Professor Named Educator of the Year!

Dr. Katie Wix, Assistant Professor of Counseling, has only been an educator at Governors State University since last August, but she has already earned recognition for her work as an educator of school counselors.

Dr. Wix was recently awarded the 2016 Illinois School Counselor Educator of the Year by the Illinois School Counselor Association (ISCA) at their annual conference. This honor was bestowed for her work at GSU and Northern Illinois University.

At GSU, Dr. Wix teaches in the school counseling preparation program and works closely with school counselors-in-training to implement American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national standards in the classroom. Dr. Wix wants her students to graduate from GSU knowing how to create comprehensive developmental school counseling programs that are evidence-based and data driven. The school counselors-in-training at GSU use data to identify school concerns and student needs, which are integral to academic achievement and student success. GSU graduate students in school counseling help students overcome barriers to learning while working to create systemic change.

“As educators, we have an impact on our students’ lives as they enter a new profession,” said Dr. Wix. “This award recognizes the importance of involvement and advocacy at the state level for school counseling and for school counselors-in-training.”

According to Dr. Wix, the positive impact can be seen in the involvement of GSU school counselors-in-training with local school districts and classrooms. Dr. Wix is pleased with the university’s focus on collaborative partnerships between the university and the community. As an example, she cited her work with students at GSU to create developmentally appropriate counseling curricula that is inclusive of state mandated goals and outcomes for students pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.

“It means our students are very up-to-date and involved,” said Dr. Wix. “It is great to be a part of a program where we can bring state and national standards to the classroom.”

TODAY IS NATIONAL TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY!
The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day “as a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives”. Teachers play a critical role in educating and shaping our children: the future leaders of our country. They are kind, patient, hard-working, dedicated and understanding professionals that mold our children’s lives in a positive direction. We entrust our children with the teachers, and they affect their lives on a daily basis. It is time to say “Thank You” to the special teachers that you know. Let them know that they are appreciated for all that they do.

GSU remains strong in spite of the Illinois budget impasse. We are open, we are planning to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2019 and our 100th anniversary in 2069. We are not raising tuition for 2016-17, and we will continue accepting liability for the Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants for low-income students. While we are doing everything we can think of to influence Illinois state government to invest in public higher education, we must control the factors that are within our power. We will do our best to plan for GSU’s long-term future, always putting students first. For more information on how the situation in Illinois is affecting GSU visit: http://www.govst.edu/gsu-ill-budget-facts/

As we enter the tenth month of the Illinois budget impasse and approach the end of the academic year without a state budget, many people are wondering how the stalemate is affecting Governors State University (GSU).
