Shout out to two of our students who were named winners of the Penn State Rock Ethics Institute's 2026 Stand Up Awards for Undergraduate Ethical Leadership: Kaelonnah Darlich and Christina Ellis.

Darlich is a biology major going into her fourth year and Ellis graduated in the spring with dual degrees in Spanish and integrative science.

The Stand Up Awards recognize undergraduate students at Penn State who have demonstrated ethical leadership by standing up for a cause, idea or belief.

In a new study led by Gui Becker, associate professor of biology, the team found that amphibians in connected natural forests and aquatic habitats were more likely to host beneficial skin microbes that inhibit a deadly fungal pathogen.

“Animals rely not only on their immune systems, but also on beneficial microbes that live on their bodies and help protect them from pathogens,” said Becker.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international public health emergency due to an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — what do you need to know?

• Ebola is a group of viruses, and the Bundibugyo strain is the one causing the current outbreak.
• The virus is transmitted by direct contact through bodily fluids like blood or vomit of an infected, symptomatic person. It is not casually transmitted by handshakes or respiratory droplets when coughing or sneezing.
• There is no vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, but there is for the Zaire strain. Work is currently being done to assess whether this vaccine could provide any protection against the currently circulating Bundibugyo virus.

Watch Ebola expert and Associate Professor of Biology Nita Bharti share some important facts, and read the full Q&A with Bharti and Kelsee Baranowski, a postdoctoral researcher in Bharti’s lab at https://bit.ly/4vkXB5b.

Since the fall of 2024, students in the honors section of CHEM 110 — an introductory chemistry course — have been getting first-hand experience in using AI to help them prepare for exams in ways that are appropriate and effective.

“I am extremely interested in education research and care deeply about how my students learn, so I wanted to see if we could incorporate a fun research project into the course,” said Morgan Vincent, a postdoc in chemistry and teaching assistant for the class.
