Latinos and the Environment

Latinos and the Environment Latinos and the Environment is an initiative of the Center for Latino Policy and Research (CLPR) at UC Berkeley.

This initiative seeks to spark dialogue and policy surrounding the relationship of Latinos and environmental issues. Our core event is our April 2018 Summit, in which we will bring together students, academics, policy-makers, and non-profit organizations. An outcome will be the construction of a roadmap and a streamlined concept paper that aligns organizations toward clear goals and policy action.

As the main coordinator of the summit, the CLPR acts as the link bridging research and its action-oriented, policy outcomes.

Hola todxs!

We hope you’re all doing well during this busy finals season This Fall, LEMAS (Latinx Engineers, Mathematicians, and Applied Scientists) and L&E had the incredible opportunity to attend the annual SACNAS(Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) NDiSTEM Conference in Phoenix, Arizona!

Thanks to the support of Big C, we were able to fully fund nine students, covering lodging, flights, meals, and travel expenses. This allowed undergraduate students to attend one of the largest STEM diversity conferences at no cost, connect with future employers, and explore diverse career paths in STEM.

A quick reminder: the Big C Referendum grant application is now open, and the deadline to apply is January 20, 2025!

In our last week of listening and learning in Oaxaca, Mexico. We visited the Mixteca Alta - Geoparque. We first stoped en el pueblo Santa Maria Chachoapam and had a delicious breakfast in a humble home whose familia is part of the Geoparque project. Then we were greeted by el presidente municipal and their staff. We then had a talk about the Basura cero project and spent the day visiting various dams the community as built to catch water as the rains a scarce. Spent the rest of the day talking to farmers about the various crops specifically focusing on el maiz (San Andres Sinaxtla). We ended visiting Santo Domingo Yanhuitlan where we learned of an old codices book and the convento.
We also spent time the following day walking en el Zocalo, visiting the mercados, having lunch (Tlayudas) and enjoying the murals all over Oaxaca downtown. Bonding and learning together as we head back to UCDavis and UCBerkeley the group will keep together via the Latinx and the Environment Program.

In Mexico City with our second cohort of Conociendo Nuestra Cultura (CNC) via the Latinxs and the Environment Program. This time we partnered with UC Davis and we are 5 UCB students and 5 UCDavis students and our research focus is on the shortage and contamination of water in Mexico City and Oaxaca. And I want to thank Vice Chancellor Pablo Reguerin for partnering with us and also Alexandra Acevedo Grave (UCB) and Rodrigo Bonilla (UCDavis) for being amazing colegas on this trip with the undergraduate and graduate students. Sharing some pictures of our experiences and the journal writing time at UNAM.
