Want to learn the behind the scenes of running a registered organization? Want to help continue to make the outdoors more accessible for everyone and maintain stewardship? Want to organize and lead outdoor adventures you’ve always wanted to but weren’t sure how or didn’t have the means? Apply to join the MAPAS board to make these wants a reality! We are currently accepting applications for the 23-24 school year for new board members to help lead the invaluable work MAPAS does to be inclusive, equitable, fair, and more. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and stay open until positions are filled. All UCSB students are welcome to apply, no previous experience necessary. The application can be found in the linktree in our bio, with a description of each position that will be open and what being on the board will look like. You can apply to one or multiple positions and we will work together to decide the best fit! We look forward to reviewing everyone’s applications and our future new board members!

Making Adventures Possible for All Students

Founding

We all met at UCSB’s Educational Opportunity Program: Summer Transitional Education Program(STEP) before our first year. All though practically strangers at the time, we knew we shared similar experiences as first-generation, low income college students coming to UCSB. The experiences we individually faced our first year provided us with the basis of what we wanted MAPAS to be. We noticed the cost of participating in these activities was at times too steep. We felt alienated and culturally isolated in certain spaces. We felt that there was a lack of diversity in STEM and environmental based majors. A year after meeting at STEP, we came together to form MAPAS. With ranging levels of experience and skills, we set out to create an organization that would address the lack of diversity in outdoor recreational activities in hopes that it would have an profound influence on more than just getting outdoors.

Our Mission

The mission of MAPAS is to create opportunities for historically underrepresented communities to engage in outdoor activities and create a community that empowers one another to discover new passions they might have not been able to otherwise. Additionally, we aim to educate one another on environmental issues and foster a sense of stewardship for the outdoors.
