Last night, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson visited our campus and spoke about her life, the law, and her memoir. Justice Jackson also spoke about her experience competing at the 1987 University of Mississippi High School Speech/Debate tournament.

In her book, Justice Jackson recalls:

“Looking back, what I recall most about twelfth grade, apart from the thrill of my Harvard acceptance, is the consistent success I experienced with the final oration of my high school career. ... The first major tournament of the season was held at the University of Mississippi in the early fall. Right out of the gate, the speech earned me top honors, and was even published in the university's Fall 1987 issue of Progressive Forensics. The fact that I had kicked off my senior year with a win at Ole Miss was especially memorable...”

The UM high school speech/debate tournament is a proud tradition that continues to this day. This season, the tournament will be February 27-28, 2026.
