NIST and NSF Award Nearly $7.1 Million to 15 Universities to Support Disaster Resilience. Thalakkottukara, N. T., Thomas, J., Watkins, M. K., Holland, B. C., Oommen, T., & Grover, H. (2024). Suitability of the height above nearest drainage (HAND) model for flood inundation mapping in data-scarce regions: a comparative analysis with hydrodynamic models. Earth Science Informatics, 1-15.
This study highlights the challenges in accessing flood inundation maps in rural areas, emphasizing the importance of effective floodplain management. The HAND model, based on terrain characteristics, proves a suitable approach for mapping flood risk in data-scarce regions during extreme rainfall events.
