OSU Aerospace Systems Discovery Lab ASDL inspires students through hands-on learning with real-world aerospace systems

09/12/2019

Exercising the MD-80 lab APU, controls and starboard engine last month. A couple of our graduate students observing the engine run and thrust reverser cycling. We ran the engine up to 80% N1 before bringing back to idle and cycling the reverser a couple of times.
Hoping to have our undergraduates out this spring to observe the systems in action.

Some of our OSU Aerospace Engineering Students from Class of 2020 got their first exposure to the lab just before the semester ended. Glad to have them out and will see them again in the Fall!

All this spring we've been working to upgrade the ASDL site. One of the big improvements is the addition of the OSU decals to the MD-80 fuselage and lab sign at the fence. Big thanks to the OSU sign shop and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology folks who made this happen!

Back in April we were proud to host a multi-agency emergency response exercise at the MD-80 lab. The City of Stillwater and Stillwater Regional Airport organized this event to hone their emergency response skills and to improve their procedures. Many volunteers were recruited to be "passengers" and even a couple of actual pilots from OSU's Aviation Education (https://education.okstate.edu/aado/) program were on board. Proud that our OSU lab can be a resource to the community!

The spring 2019 semester has been busy and I have neglected posting about all the great activities at the lab. Will try to make up for that!
Today we hosted the NASA Mission To Planet Earth student teachers group (http://spacegrant.oknasa.org/mtpe). This wonderful program provides a teachers in training with a wide set of experiences to bring science into their classrooms. We toured the MD-80 and then went into the sheet metal shop to demonstrate riveting and bending. They are rightfully proud of their projects!
