Understanding Monogenic Diabetes: A Closer Look at HNF1A-MODY

What makes HNF1A-MODY different from other forms of MODY?

The HNF1A gene plays an important role in the function of beta cells, which are cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Changes in this gene can lead to diabetes, often before age 35.

HNF1A-MODY can sometimes be mistaken for type 1 diabetes. But knowing the underlying genetic cause can have an important impact on treatment. It is usually inherited so identifying it can also provide important information for family members.

Could screening help identify type 1 diabetes before symptoms appear?

New international consensus guidance developed by diabetes experts convened by Breakthrough T1D provides recommendations for screening children for early-stage type 1 diabetes — including children without a family history of T1D.

Screening looks for islet autoantibodies in the blood, which can signal that the immune system is attacking insulin-producing cells. Finding T1D earlier can reduce the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at diagnosis and give families more time to understand their options and prepare.

The new guidance recommends beginning screening between ages 2 and 4, with additional screening at later ages for children who initially test negative.

Your experience with type 1 diabetes matters.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is asking for public input as it considers how deceased donor islet cells used to treat type 1 diabetes should be regulated. For some people with T1D, islet cell transplantation can help the body produce insulin again.

This is an opportunity for people living with diabetes, their families and others in the diabetes community to share their perspectives directly with HHS.

The deadline to submit comments is November 8.

On October 13, members of the Kovler Diabetes Center team joined colleagues from across Chicago's diabetes research and care community for the 14th Annual UIC Diabetes & Obesity Research Day.

Charanya Muralidharan, Jacob Enriquez, Julie Burkett, Kerim Kaylan, Armando Puente, Victoria Torres, Peggy Hasenauer and Dr. Matthew Brady attended the event, connecting with fellow researchers and healthcare professionals and exploring the latest advances in diabetes research and treatment.

We believe our patients are best served when Chicago's diabetes centers learn and grow together. Events like this strengthen the relationships and collaboration that help move diabetes research and care forward.

Thank you to our colleagues at UIC for hosting such a valuable opportunity to connect and exchange ideas.

We're proud to be part of the conversation about improving diabetes care!

On November 10, members of our Kovler Diabetes Center team will participate in the American Diabetes Association's 2026 State of Diabetes: Chicago event.

The event brings together healthcare professionals, researchers, and community leaders to discuss challenges and opportunities in diabetes prevention, treatment, and care.

Panel discussions will explore topics ranging from putting the latest research into practice to addressing the emotional and social challenges of living with diabetes and obesity.

The event takes place Tuesday, November 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST at Malcolm X College in Chicago.

Federal investment in type 1 diabetes research has helped drive advances that have transformed diabetes care — from continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems to disease-modifying therapies and progress toward cell replacement therapies.

The Special Diabetes Program (SDP), which supports T1D research through the National Institutes of Health, is currently funded at $200 million annually but is set to expire on December 31, 2026.

Breakthrough T1D is encouraging members of the T1D community to contact their representatives in Congress in support of continued funding for this important research program.

Community outreach in action!

On September 16, Elizabeth Murphy, MS, RDN, LDN, CDCES, patient navigator and diabetes educator at the Kovler Diabetes Center, led a seminar on Science Communication and Storytelling for the International Children’s Advisory Network (iCAN) KIDS Walter Payton chapter.

Elizabeth shared her expertise with students interested in healthcare, exploring how clear, engaging communication can help make complex health and science information more meaningful and accessible.

We’re proud to see members of the Kovler team sharing their knowledge and expertise in our community and helping inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

People with type 1 diabetes have an opportunity to make their voices heard.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking public input on how deceased donor islet cells used to treat type 1 diabetes should be regulated.

Islet cell transplantation can help some people with type 1 diabetes produce insulin again. HHS is considering whether changes to the current regulatory framework could improve access while maintaining important safety and quality protections.

HHS encourages all interested parties — including people with diabetes and their families — to share their perspectives.

An important new treatment option is now available for adults with type 1 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved finerenone (Kerendia) for adults with chronic kidney disease associated with type 1 diabetes. The medication helps reduce a marker of kidney damage and is expected to slow the progression of kidney disease.

This marks the first new treatment approved for kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes in more than 30 years.
