FACULTY NEWS: Congratulations to Dr. Emily Jay who recently spoke at the 61st International Congress on Medieval Studies. The conference took place May 14—16, 2026. Hosted by Western Michigan University’s Medieval Institute, the conference is dedicated to the interdisciplinary advancement of Medieval and Renaissance studies.

Her presentation was entitled, “Creatively Engaging with the Saints.” The Congress is an annual academic conference held for scholars specializing in, or with an interest in, medieval studies. It is the largest annual gathering in the field, regularly attracting over 3,000 registered participants from all over the world.

Dr. Jay is an artist-scholar who researches the relationship between female saints and the cities they protect in Sicily utilizing arts-based research methodologies and new materialist philosophies. She is interested in engaging with Italy’s past in creative ways so as to disrupt binary ways of thinking while also re-centering female perspectives into historical narratives. She is an assistant professor of art at Ohio Northern University. She earned her BFA from Ohio Northern, her MFA from Bowling Green State University, and her Ph.D. from Texas Tech University. She has exhibited across the country, including “Ablution,” a site-specific installation in deconsecrated 13th century Benedictine Church, Toffia, Italy. She has earned several awards and grants, presented at national and international conferences, published numerous articles, and awarded a variety of international artist residences.
