Neil Desnoyers for UD School Board

Neil Desnoyers for UD School Board Well - it had to come to an end at some point. School board was a memorable experience.

I resigned from the Board of School Directors of the Upper Darby School District effective May 29, 2025 as my wife and I moved out of the district. As of December 5th, 2017 I am proud to be a School Director for the Upper Darby (PA) School District. I am also a part-time faculty member (adjunct) at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

Given the value the district places on equity, we welcome bids that bring diversity to the project.

Completed bids must be submitted by Dec 14th.

Now that it's official, I am honored and deeply moved that the families of the Upper Darby School District have placed enough trust in me that I have been re-elected to my School Director position on school board. I pledge to work to keep earning the trust and support of District families. It is my goal to make you proud to be part of the Upper Darby School District.

Happenings in the Upper Darby School District:

Progress at Aronimink Elementary School as permits, etc. start getting sorted out.
It's been a month, but the District welcomed an agreement with the Borough of Clifton Heights that will lead to the first NEW school being built in ~50 years in a district with longstanding and significant overcrowding issues in our schools.

For Women's History Month, I would like to remember Maryam Mirzakhani, a gifted mathematician the world lost too soon. Among many other accomplishments, Maryam - in 1995 - became the first Iranian to earn a perfect score in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Congrats to our UDSD Seniors! While this pandemic is certainly not the way you planned to spend your Senior Spring it doesn't take anything away from your 13 years of accomplishments.

A couple great videos celebrating your accomplishments - courtesy of UDSD:

With the downturn in the economy due to COVID-19, there's talk of government budget cuts. Here in Pennsylvania there are rumors that state funding for public education could be cut by several billion dollars. Yes, that's a B. To make things worse, PA's public school funding system is already the most inequitable. That's not a distinction of which to be proud. And the thing is, cuts to public education have a wide-ranging impact. In my school district (https://www.upperdarbysd.org/), salaries account for approx. 75% of our annual budget. And that doesn't include salaries for contracted workers. These salaries go to everyday Americans. But at least as important as hurting our employees, budget cuts hurt our students. Our students are our future. Think about it.

At the heart of public education in America is local control. Local school boards know best how the residents of their districts would like the impact of a downturn in the economy addressed. The one-size-fits-all type of solutions being proposed at the state level (at least in PA) take away this local control. And in PA, the state funding inequities mean that less-well-off-communities have older facilities that require larger maintenance & repair budgets that cause more impact if cut. If you care about this please contact your elected officials! Don't know who they are? Well, imagine that - you can find a handy site to look them up here: https://secure.everyaction.com/p/VwRNjx4BCEmZoQNE0k3Vmg2?submit=Look+up+your+legislator (works for any zip code in the US, I think). Don't want to do that? You can find additional suggested activities to support public education here: https://www.pccy.org/take-action/ .

Public education needs you! Now!

OK - I'll get off my soapbox now
