Friday, we traveled to rural Bloomington to visit a couple of farms. We had the opportunity to visit the Dean’s Pork and Beef Farm and see how the farm and how they run their operation. We walked through different buildings to see how and why each one was designed to make the livestock as comfortable as possible, while making it as cost-efficient as possible. We were also able to visit the O’Neall Bros & Scholl Farm. This visit gave us insight on technology and equipment for corn and soybean production. To end the day we visited a wind turbine and discussed the developing wind energy industry. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time for us and for being transparent! And especially to Mrs. Scholl, who made us a delicious lunch!

Now that we’ve all made it home safely from DC, we’re now reflecting on the exciting week we just had in Washington DC.

From visiting with the legislative assistants of our state’s congressmen/congresswomen and meeting with people from the USDA and EPA, to discussing policy issues with national farm organizations and networking with people involved in the ag industry at the Agri-Pulse Summit, we can all say that we’ve learned so much more than we could have ever anticipated.

Frequent topics that came up over the duration of our trip included components of the Farm Bill such as SNAP, crop insurance, and conservation, NAFTA, food security, and biotechnology. It was fascinating to learn about the varying viewpoints different organizations have concerning the functioning and advancement of the ag industry. Even more fascinating was how different groups of people can come form coalitions with each other to reach common goals despite differing opinions. Listening to everyone explain their approaches to hot topic issues also enabled us to advance our own opinions on the issues discussed.

We’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone to took the time out of their day to sit down and talk to our group about things we are all passionate about and to everyone who spoke with our class previously in the semester. Most importantly, we’d like to thank Jon and Dana for organizing this trip for us and making sure we got as much out of this experience as possible. We are grateful for the valuable information extended to us by our nation’s experts and for the friendships that grew between us all throughout the week. This was a rewarding experience that we will remember forever.

Well, that’s a wrap! Today, we had the opportunity to complete our last visit with former United States Secretary of Agriculture and Exeucitve Director of The Aspen Institute Mr. Dan Glickman. While visiting with him, we discussed various key topics in the agriculture industry including international trade and tariffs, the Farm bill, and agricultural development globally. Overall, our experience on this trip was great. Being able to go to Washington, DC as a part of a policy course was very beneficial. Some of us even made connections to obtain an internship or full time career! Thank you to everyone for following us on our adventure. We really appreciate the support! Now we wait for our plane to return home!

We got a later start today due to the snow here in Washington, D.C. which led to the government being shut down. Fortunately, Bill Wehrum, the current Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation for the Environmental Protection Agency, was able to meet with us later in the afternoon. We talked with Mr. Wehrum about a wide array of topics ranging from the amount of ethanol that is blended with our gasoline, to greenhouse emissions, and how he found himself with the EPA.

Later we attended the Agri-Pulse Communications, Inc. Ag and Food Policy Summit, a meeting of government officials, industry leaders, and farmers around the nation. There we listened to Senators Pat Roberts and Debbie Stabenow, who sit on the Senate Ag Committee as Chairman and Ranking Member. The senators emphasized the need for a bipartisan Senate Farm Bill focused on protecting crop insurance and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

We attended a reception after the conference concluded where we were able to network and converse with lobbyists, lawyers, and legislators from all corners of the agriculture sector. Lastly, we had the pleasure of speaking with Illinois Representative Cheri Bustos of Illinois' 17th District. She closed out our day by answering several questions about the House of Representative's Farm Bill and the process of drafting and passing pieces of legislation as big as the Farm Bill.

Today, we spent the day exploring Capitol Hill! Everyone was able to meet with the Legislative Assistant in charge of their respective Representative’s agricultural policy. Everyone had a unique experience that gave great insight into the way congressional offices operate. We were also able to spend time visiting various House committee hearings.
One of the top highlights of the day was visiting with Congressman Rodney Davis. He is a huge supporter of the University of Illinois and we loved the opportunity to talk to him about Illinois Ag policy.
In the afternoon, we had the privilege to meet in the Senate Ag Committee Room with two members of the Committee’s staff. This meeting gave us our first experience with the real world Ag policy making process. We discussed a wide variety of topics ranging from the upcoming Farm Bill, Trade, and Dairy Policy.
We then spent time in the Senate offices, meeting with staff from Senator Tammy Duckworth and Senator Dick Durbin’s offices. Each office facilitated excellent discussions on how the Senate operates and how agriculture impacts the state.

Thank you Rep. Rodney Davis for taking time to meet with us today!!
