Let’s get to know each other!

My name is Jimmy Shehee, and I'm a rising senior in the Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering department in the Grainger College of Engineering. Outside of my classes, I'm an intern at Exelon Generation, and I'm the president of the American Nuclear Society at the University of Illinois. One of my favorite things about the Grainger College of Engineering is that it has all of the advantages of a big university while also providing ample opportunities to be a part of smaller communities around campus. My advice to new students is to get involved in Registered Student Organizations on campus and take advantage of the connections that you can build and experiences you can have!

It takes each one of us to keep campus open.

Aerospace engineering senior design teams took first and third in an international AIAA design competition.
Their challenge was to design a high-capacity, short-range transport aircraft that could alleviate airport congestion, without the size and cost that comes with long-range capability

Our alumni want to give some words of advice and encouragement to anyone starting their journey with Grainger Engineering.
Here's some from Katharine Mehan ('16) a Process Development Engineer at AbbVie.
🔸 "Make the most of your experience - take interesting classes completely unrelated to your major, meet new people, join extracurricular activities. Even though school is going to look a lot different during the pandemic, there are still so many ways to get involved, and so many unique opportunities available just because of the pandemic. Take advantage of everything that you can!"

Hello, my name is Julie Lorenzo and I am Senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

I’m involved in the graduate committee in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (also known as SHPE) and Engineering Ambassadors. Last year I worked on campus for Engineering Career Services as a Career Peer to help students grow professionally.

What I love about Grainger Engineering and Illinois in general is that there are so many opportunities and resources for us students to grow. I was a transfer student 2 years ago and I was overwhelmed by how many things I could be involved in on campus. There are resources that help you as a student like growing professional or even clubs you can join that pertain to your interests. The possibilities are limitless!

What I would encourage for this semester is to not be shy to try new things and each out to new people. Go ahead and join clubs and organizations that you think will help you grow. Only focusing on academics will lead to a burnout but joining clubs will help make friends and develop new skills you won't find in the classroom.

This will be a tough semester for all of us, but I believe Illinois does a good job at harnessing resiliency, so I’m sure faculty, staff, and students will make their best effort to have a great experience during this situation.
