Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory

Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

In the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory, Dr. Hans Stein and his graduate students and employees conduct research with monogastric animals to evaluate feed ingredients, nutrient requirements, and feeding strategies. A number of research techniques are used in the laboratory and in particular, Dr. Stein's group has expertise in the area of measuring ileal and total tract energy and nutrient digestibility, and in measuring energy and nutrient balances.

This week we celebrated that Drs. Ibagon, Jaramillo, and Fanelli (previously known as Jimena, Bibiana, and Natalia) received their diplomas, were hooded, and celebrated before they continue on their life journey, which undoubtedly will lead them to great achievements. We have been privileged to have Jimena, Bibiana, and Natalia in our team and wish them the very best in the future. Thank you for all your contributions to our team.

Bibiana Jaramillo successfully defended her doctoral dissertation today. Her seminar focused on the potential for improving the digestibility of minerals, energy, and amino acids by using 25OHD3 or phytase in diets for pigs. Bibiana will soon return to her native Colombia to continue her career. Best of luck Bibiana. We are very proud of you.

Today Jimena Ibagon successfully defended her PhD dissertation about the use of soybean meal in diets for pigs. Jimena has been very productive during her time as a Graduate student in our team and completed 8 experiments towards her dissertation. She hope to continue her career as a nutritionist in a commercial feed company in the US or somewhere in Latin America. Big congratulations to Jimena and best of luck in the future.

Natalia Fanelli successfully defended her PhD dissertation yesterday. She gave a seminar discussing her research investigating selected proteins from the salmon, seaweed, and egg industries as potential amino acid sources for pigs, humans, or dogs. She then had a chance to defend her dissertation in front of her committee. Soon-to-be Dr. Fanelli is looking for a job in the food or feed industry or in regulatory agencies. Wishing you the best of Luck Natalia.
