The Native American House at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign recently hosted its 2026 Congratulatory Ceremony, marking a profound and beautiful milestone for Native graduates. Rooted in traditional honoring practices, this ceremony carries immense significance by celebrating academic excellence while visibly strengthening the Indigenous presence across academic disciplines. The one-of-a-kind ceremony brought together relatives, distinguished guests, and tribal community members to honor our scholars on the traditional homelands of the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Miami, Mascoutin, Odawa, Sauk, Mesquaki, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Chickasaw Nations. We are incredibly proud to recognize the achievements of this year's graduates:

William Bartee (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma): Graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Biology and was honored with the Legacy Wool Blanket

Justin Bean (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma): Graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and was honored with the Bear Medicine Wool Blanket

Cecelia Lopez (Muache Band of the Southern Ute Tribe and Chiricahua Apache): Graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Art History (minors in American Indian Studies and Museum Studies) and was honored with the Whispering Blossoms Wool Blanket

Yanaba Schroeder (Diné): Graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies (minor in American Indian Studies) and received the New Beginnings Wool Blanket. Yanaba was also presented with The Michael L. Jeffries, Sr., Center for Access and Academic Success Excellence Award

Madisyn Schroeder (Diné): Celebrated a vital milestone by graduating from Ridgeview High School, receiving her diploma and the Walk in Beauty Wool Blanket

🌱 Herbal Health + Community Care Recap 🌱

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Finals Relief Program! The Native American House was filled with warmth, community, and the comforting aroma of traditional remedies.

In collaboration with the Trickster Cultural Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, the Native American House invited students to engage in hands-on herbal medicine making. Led by NAH Ambassador Ashlee Shoemaker (Diné), it was an incredibly engaging afternoon. Participants made herbal cough drops, shared Navajo Tea, and learned how traditional practices support balance, healing, and everyday health.

A special and heartfelt thank you to Melissa Shoemaker from the Trickster Cultural Center for coming to campus and supporting our NAH Student Ambassador during her presentation. We are also thrilled that everyone could leave with take-home materials and recipes to continue these practices!

We are so grateful for our community partners and the students who make these programs so meaningful 🧡💙

WHY IS THAT BUILDING RED?
Today, May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives. This evening, a handful of campus buildings are illuminating their spaces in red lighting in an organized effort by Native American House to shed light on a crisis that demands urgent attention: the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) crisis.

MMIR is an acknowledgment of the disproportionate rates of violence and death of Indigenous relatives in the United States. These buildings shine red to signify that we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, acknowledging the centuries-long failures of the lack of protection and justice for Indigenous relatives. This crisis, rooted in historical injustices, systemic racism, and jurisdictional barriers, persists due to inadequate responses at various institutional levels.

Through education and awareness, Native American House strives to empower our local community to stand with Indigenous and Native American peoples, support justice, and work towards lessening further harm to our relatives. Thank you to our on going campus partners as this collaboration would not be possible without you: American Indian Studies, Women's Resource Center, and Spurlock Museum of World Cultures. Together, our campus partners help amplify the remembrance of the missing and murdered. We all should be working towards a future where all Indigenous relatives are protected and honored.
