Join and support the Basque language!

On March 20th we will be celebrating KORRIKA. But what is Korrika? It is a biennial initiative in support of the Basque language. Its aim is to promote awareness in favor of the Basque and raise funds for the academies that offer courses in this language. It consists of a run throughout the Basque Country, where participants carry a token with them. This token contains a saved message that is passed from hand to hand until it reaches its final destination.

This year we will host a mini Korrika at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign thanks to European Union Center at the University of Illinois, Department of Spanish and Portuguese - Graduate Programs, Etxepare Euskal Institutua / Basque Institute, and AEK.

From Basque at UIUC, we wanted to inform you all about the "Diaspora Day Conversation", an event happening TOMORROW, SEPT. 8, organized by the Basque Studies Program at Boise State University which intends to generate conversation and inspire innovative collaboration in Basque Studies.

Graduate students, faculty, and institutions will be proposing collaborative projects on Basque culture, literature, linguistics, and pedagogy!

Good morning, Illini!

Today's image is a bit different from our usual beautiful pictures. This is Gernika, after the bombing of the town by the German Luftwaffe allowed by Franco. Today is the 84th anniversary of the bombing, which was famously captured by Pablo Picasso's artwork, commissioned by the Second Republic.

The bombing of Gernika came a month after Italian planes bombed Durango. Both towns were devastated and became symbols of the horrors of war.
