Sigma Delta Mu recognizes excellence in Spanish among an important segment of the student population of higher education (2-year college). Founded in 1979, it had its foundation in Sigma Delta Pi, the largest honor society in the field of foreign language. The purposes of the society are:
1) to honor those who seek and attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language, literature and the cul

ture of the Spanish-speaking peoples 2) to honor those who strive to make the Hispanic contribution to modern culture better known to English-speaking peoples
3) to encourage students to acquire a greater interest and deeper understanding of Hispanic culture, and
4) to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech.
