SUNY Westchester Workforce Development was one of the first recipients of Metallica Scholars funding from All Within My Hands, a nonprofit established by the heavy metal band Metallica to promote training programs for the trades.

With a workforce nearing retirement age, Hudson Valley's robust Advanced Manufacturing sector often struggles to hire skilled workers. To meet that demand, SUNY Westchester's Advanced Manufacturing training program provides learners with four professional certifications from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).

The program pays off. An analysis of the Metallica Scholars Initiative has found that students were expected to earn a median wage more than eight times the cost of the program.

โ€œSome people have jobs and they want to advance their careers, but a lot of students come into the program without a job and they want to work with their hands. They like building and creating things,โ€ says program director Jim Irvine.

Across the two classes, you will learn key topics including legal powers, emergency procedures, communication skills, access control, ethics, incident command, and terrorism awareness.

Both the 8-hour & 16-hour courses are required to obtain an official security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. (16-hour class must be taken within 90 days of starting a security job.)
