Government agencies, private donors, and students themselves increasingly demand evidence that the services they pay for lead to good jobs.

Two articles that crossed our desk recently succinctly lay out the challenges educators -- and community colleges in particular -- face in meeting pressure to move beyond simply delivering quality classes.

Improving employment outcomes is easier said than done. Success is a product of many components historically not central to college mission or practices, such as systemic integration of career readiness skills into classes and building robust hiring relationships with regional employers.

As Stanley J. Taylor, Jr., senior director of higher education strategy for Year Up United, notes in 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑒 𝐷𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑦, "providing career navigation services is often an uphill battle." Community colleges typically lack the career services resources and alumni networks that seen at four-year institutions. Available funding rarely covers staff time necessary for employer outreach. Taylor describes innovate approaches adopted at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).

A piece in 𝐸𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑊𝑒𝑒𝑘 highlights why establishing stronger ties between schools and employers is so difficult. It focuses on the need for CTE programs specifically to collect better data around learner outcomes that can identify gaps and opportunities and drive new conversations with employers: "We haven’t been able to move the needle on employer engagement. We were having the same conversation about how to engage employers in CTE that we’ve been having for 10, 20, 30, 50, years. So [we’re] trying to think of some new ways, new pushes in that area, [to] create some new relationships."

Advance CTE, a national nonprofit, is currently working to map existing models, identify missing resources, and bring together stakeholders.

We're Hiring! High School Equivalency (HSE) Exam Proctor at SUNY WCC Mount Vernon Extension Center.

Job Description: Assists in the administration of the New York State high school equivalency exam and performs related administrative tasks at the SUNY WCC Mount Vernon Center. They administer the tests at scheduled times according to all applicable procedures, laws and regulations; prepare the exam setting, process test candidates and communicates effectively with test candidates taking into consideration the varied educational levels and backgrounds of those requiring information.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate MUST possess a Bachelor's degree from a nationally accredited college or university (per proctor regulations), and experience in teaching, training, counseling, or testing.

HOURLY RATE OF PAY: $26.42 per hour. No benefits. This position is fully grant funded.

WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays, approximately 7 hours per day. Some evening hours required.
