Cal Poly Maritime Academy ⚓
The West Coast's only degree-granting maritime academy.

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located in Vallejo, California, the campus serves nearly 1,000 students and offers undergraduate degrees preparing students for careers in engineering, transportation, international relations, business, and global logistics. The new oceanography degree program launched

in the fall of 2020. Cal Maritime also offers a master’s degree in Transportation and Engineering Management, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

When it mattered most, Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadet Zion Jerge stepped up. Today, we had the opportunity to recognize him for it. ⚓

Earlier this month, Jerge heard screams coming from a nearby apartment complex in Foster City and ran to help. He found two people in distress in a swimming pool and immediately took action. Jerge first rescued one person from the water, bringing them safely out of the pool. When he learned a second man was unconscious at the bottom of the pool, Jerge went back in, pulled him to the surface and immediately began CPR. A short time later, the man began breathing on his own.

For his immediate and effective action in preventing the loss of life, Superintendent Rear Adm. Eric Jones presented Jerge with the Cal Poly Maritime Academy Meritorious Service Ribbon.

Jerge also received a lifesaving commendation from the Foster City Police Department recognizing his actions that day.

Zion demonstrated courage, composure and a bias to action when others needed him most.

That’s leadership. That’s Ready Day One.

Congratulations, Zion. Well deserved.

Gov. Gavin Newsom visited Mare Island today, with Training Ship Golden Bear providing the backdrop for an announcement focused on California’s workforce and economic future. ⚓

Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets were on hand for the event, joined by Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and California State University Chancellor Mildred García.

It was a great opportunity to showcase our cadets, our campus and the important role maritime education and workforce development play in California’s future.

It was also a fitting recognition of Golden Bear’s 30 years of service to the Academy as the ship approaches the end of its remarkable tenure.

From first formation to officially joining the Corps.

New members of the Corps of Cadets began Orientation Week learning the basics of formation, working within their squads, sections, divisions and companies while building the leadership, discipline and teamwork that are central to the Corps experience.

Then came one of the week’s first traditions: capping.

During the capping ceremony, new cadets don their Cal Poly Maritime Academy lids for the first time, officially welcoming them into the Corps of Cadets. Family members, friends and loved ones are there to share in the milestone.

New Cal Poly Maritime Academy students kicked off Orientation Week by picking up their seabags, uniforms and other essentials at our PEAC Main Gym during move-in day.

It’s the first of a full week of activities designed to welcome our newest students and their families, help them get settled and prepare them for the start of their Cal Poly Maritime experience.

Cameron Furin was part of the only Pacific Cup crew to feature college students competing against an all-professional field in last month's world-renowned offshore competition from San Francisco to Hawaii.

Said Furin, regarding this unique opportunity available only to Cal Poly Maritime Academy students:

“I've been sailing dinghies for about five years with some offshore experience mixed in, this is my first big offshore race.”

“The first couple days were difficult to get into the groove of things, but the crew settled down. Everyone enjoyed a great experience and never stopped learning (especially me).”

Indigo Craig experienced a role reversal this summer when her family cheered for her and welcomed her at the finish line, not the other way around as has been the case growing up in a sailing family, when Cal Poly Maritime Academy arrived to Hawaii to officially complete its first Pacific Cup adventure.

“I come from a family of great sailors, including my grandpa and dad. Due to this (lineage), I spent countless races tracking them racing across the Pacific. Now I’m on the other side of the tracker racing against my dad.”

“I always knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps and race to Hawai’i. What I didn’t realize was that I would get to do it with a group of classmates that have become close friends.”

“We are a young team, but the skill is there; we were serious but also had so much fun. I think everyone can say they learned a lot.”

Known for his singlehanded sailing prowess, Nick Mueller reflects on his summertime offshore experience as a member of Cal Poly Maritime Academy's inaugural Pacific Cup crew:

“I come from a singlehanded sailing background with almost no offshore experience, sailing a 50-foot boat across the Pacific with eight others was quite the different experience for me.”

“I learned to become part of a team and to trust others’ abilities. I enjoyed being on watch with my friends and driving through some big waves, I could not think of a better way to end this summer before my last year at Cal Poly Maritime Academy.”

Said Chase Englehart, member of Cal Poly Maritime Academy's crew in its recent Pacific Cup appearance, regarding his experience:

“Sailing to Hawaii this time was a lot of fun and different from my last crossing on summer cruise where everyone's major determined their role on the Golden Bear. That said, there was a learning curve using the sextant, that was a great experience with the sun moving up and down on the horizon. Overall, this is a great experience and was thrilled to become a part of it.”

“There comes a time in any adventure when out of nowhere the discussion naturally turns to what's ahead. That conservation began shortly before we crossed the finish line. Developing a work schedule, delivery plans, lists of goods to be acquired and rounded up while in Kaneohe, in addition to discussions about the upcoming school year just weeks away and who's doing what for the trip home were major topics discussed among the crew.

"We truly enjoyed the last 48 hours of beautiful sailing conditions before everyone prepared for the future.”

Said Silas Watson, regarding his experience:

“What did I get myself into? I am a non-traditional marime engineering technology student with less than 10 months sailing experience.”

“If I am honest, I am not even sure how I earned a spot on this boat. If you were to tell me two years ago that I would not only be going to college, but sailing towards Hawaii for the Pacific Cup, I never would have believed you. I am just humbled every day at what an awesome experience this is.”

“Without my fellow crewmates/classmates, I don't think I could have done this alone. I am constantly reminded of everyone in my life that pushed me and supported me in my journey to get here, I used those reminders for strength.”
