🎨 Instructor Spotlight: Nathun Finkhouse

When asked what he loves most about teaching at Clark, Nathun shares:

“Seeing someone’s face light up when they realize they can indeed be artistic is the most rewarding thing I know.”

Many of Nathun’s students haven’t practiced art since childhood—sometimes decades. He understands the baggage people carry into creative spaces and takes joy in helping quiet that inner voice that says “I’m not good enough.” His classes focus on exploration, experimentation, and rediscovering creative confidence in a welcoming, collaborative environment.

This winter, Nathun will be teaching a variety of art classes—including watercolor, drawing, and acrylic—inviting students of all experience levels to reconnect with their creativity.

Meet Tami Smith, a longtime educator who brings 40 years of teaching experience to her joyful watercolor classes. After 25 years in the classroom and 15 years as a full-time art teacher, she still lights up when someone tries something new.

“I love getting to know the students. Everyone is so nice and so fun — my goal is always for people to enjoy themselves and feel successful.”

When Tami moved to Vancouver for retirement, she wanted to stay connected and creative — and we’re so glad she chose Clark.

🌧 Gorge wind. Freezing rain. Surprise snow days.

Our weather instructor has thoughts. 👇

This winter in the Portland–Vancouver area is expected to be a classic La Niña pattern: bigger swings and more drama, not just steady drizzle.

From his winter forecast:
• Expect heavy rain events, possible flooding, fog, and strong Gorge winds
• Freezing rain is on the table
• 3 snow events are likely for our area this season — one moderate (about 2–3"), two lighter (an inch or less)

This is why we love our instructors: they don’t just teach in a classroom. They’re out in the community giving talks, answering questions, and taking students into the field to see real geology and weather in action.

📸 Pictured: Kyle Dittmer (Weather 101 / Geology of the Columbia Gorge) with a student at Latourell Falls.

Want to actually understand what’s happening in the sky this winter — and why the Gorge does what it does?

➡ Weather 101 starts February 3 at our Columbia Tech Center location.
