On July 15, a group of four APU nursing students from the High Desert Regional Campus answered a desperate call for help from a homeless man who had been assaulted on the street. The students—Milagro Gonzalez, Karen Vanessa Hernandez, Brittney Kaiser, and Carolina Martinez—who were nearby at the Victor Valley Rescue Mission on a community health clinical rotation, provided lifesaving medical help to the man who had been hit in the head with a brick and was bleeding profusely. The students remained with the victim until deputies and paramedics arrived.
“My nursing students said that they really believe that every beating heart and every life matters and they were glad they were there to help,” said assistant professor Lydia Garcia Usry, RN, PHN, DNP. “They all truly believe that God put them at that time at that place to help during this time.”
