At the end of this semester the SEM college will bid a sad farewell to one of our own, Professor Steve Brothers. He has been teaching Math locally for 45 years and has been here at VU for 12 of those years. In addition to teaching, for the past 15 years he has also been the radio announcer for basketball, baseball and softball for the Washington High School Hatchets.
I asked him a few questions about teaching and his plans for the future.
What made you decide to become a teacher?
Great question. I originally got my Masters in Chemical Engineering from Rose Hulman. I worked at that for 5 years but didn't enjoy it. I thought teaching would be fun. I have taught high school chemistry a little but I thought that math would be easier to teach.
What would you say was/is the most rewarding part of your teaching career?
I think that being around young people, keeps you young. Also the more you are around them the better understanding you have of them.
Is there anything you will miss about teaching?
At the age I'm at now I'll miss my colleagues the most.
What advice would you give to young people who are considering becoming a teacher?
The profession is getting harder. AI is part of the reason. Kids have changed and things that worked then, don't work now. It can still be rewarding though with the right kids.
What are you looking forward to most about your retirement and any specific plans you'd like to share?
The thing I'm looking forward to the most is not having an alarm clock. I'm just going to relax and decide what to do next. My 3 sons live in Indy so I'll be spending time with them. I also have 5 grandchildren all under the age of 5.
Professor Brothers has been such an asset to us here at the SEM college. He will be greatly missed but we are all happy for him and wish him the best on his retirement.
