Things got a little smoky this week. 🚒🔥

Our CNA students had the chance to take part in hands-on fire training alongside the Vincennes Fire Department and the Vincennes University Fire Science Program.

From learning how to properly use a fire extinguisher to stepping up and putting out live training fires themselves, they experienced an exciting side of safety training outside the traditional classroom.

Thank you to the Vincennes Fire Department and VU Fire Science Program for helping create such a fun and interactive experience for our students. It was a great opportunity to build confidence while learning skills that can make a real difference in emergency situations.

Big day for these students. 👏

Throughout the week, we’ve shared how apprenticeships are opening real doors for people across Indiana.

From working full-time while training with Amazon, to building hands-on skills with Caterpillar, to stepping into the skilled trades with General Motors, each story shows what’s possible when education and industry work together.

To close it out, meet Garrett Ralston, an Electrical Apprentice with Design & Build and part of Vincennes University’s partnership with Associated Builders and Contractors.

Garrett is gaining real experience in the field while continuing his training through VU, applying what he’s learning every day on the job.

“This program gives me the confidence that I can go anywhere and build a career in this trade.”

That’s what apprenticeships are all about. Real experience. Real skills. Real careers.

If you want to learn more about how Vincennes University is supporting workforce development through apprenticeships, check out the link in the comments.

Yesterday, we shared how apprenticeships help people build real, hands-on skills on the job.

Today, we’re highlighting what that can lead to.

Meet Jamy Key, an apprentice pipefitter with General Motors in Bedford.

Jamy started her career with GM in 2019 and worked her way into a leadership role. But she knew she wanted something different.

“I knew I didn’t have time to waste, so I made the decision to start over and pursue what I really wanted. That’s what led me here.”

She made the move, relocated, and took the next step toward becoming a journeyman pipefitter.

Now, through her apprenticeship, Jamy is working at GM while continuing her training through Vincennes University. She’s gaining hands-on experience with piping systems, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and applying what she learns in real time on the plant floor.

It’s not just about learning a skill. It’s about building confidence, growing into a new career, and having support every step of the way from instructors and experienced tradespeople.

This is what workforce development looks like in action. Real people taking that next step, and employers building stronger teams because of it.

Tomorrow, we’ll wrap up the week by highlighting how these opportunities continue in the skilled trades through our partnership with Associated Builders and Contractors Indiana Kentucky.
