Precision Machining is a highly skilled occupation in which raw material is machined and transformed into specialized industrial tooling or custom products. Vincennes University offers the most comprehensive Precision Machining Technology program in Indiana, and is one of the few in the United States to offer specialized training in manual machining, CNC machining, metal stamping die, and plastic

injection mold building. With over 1,600 hours of hands on experience, students have the opportunity to develop a solid background in machine shop practices, as well as learn the set-up and operation for all basic types of manual and CNC machine tools. Classroom discussions focus on theory, terminology, and calculations. The type and quality of equipment used in our labs include traditional machine tools as well as the latest in CNC equipment— identical to that found in industry. In addition, our faculty has an extensive background in education, teaching, and industry, to ensure that students receive instruction in both theory and practical applications. Precision Machining Technology graduates have the option of applying for acceptance into our 14 week summer session, Advanced CNC Machining & Programming, providing them with an additional 560 hours of hands on CNC education, as well as a second Associates degree. Starting salaries for VU’s Precision Machining graduates average in the $40,000 to $50,000 range with some far exceeding this. Job opportunities are excellent, with virtually 100 percent placement. Back in the 2017–2018 school year, many may remember, or maybe some never knew, but Kyle Loftis from 1320Video got ahold of our little student project at Vincennes University — the billet aluminum V8 business card engine blocks we were making in Precision Machining.

What started as a small classroom project turned into something none of us could’ve imagined. Kyle shared it with the world, it went viral, and through that exposure we were able to raise a little over $50,000 in scholarship funds for Precision Machining students here at VU.

That money helped a lot of students over the years. Some needed tools. Some needed help paying down their account balance so they could register for their final semester. Some were on the edge of not being able to continue. Those scholarship dollars made a real difference in a lot of lives and careers.

Between Kyle and Tom at Cold Hard Art, we owe a tremendous amount of gratitude for the kindness and support they showed our program and our students. Kyle had the kind of reach and audience that could genuinely change lives, and in our case, he absolutely did.

He may never have fully realized the ripple effect that one share had on a machining program in southern Indiana and the students who came through it.

Godspeed, Kyle. Thank you for believing in blue-collar craftsmanship, hot rods, horsepower, and the next generation of machinist.

We are extremely saddened to share that Kyle Loftis, the founder of 1320video, passed away last night. We are in a state of shock.

Kyle’s passion for motorsports inspired millions of people around the world and we will never forget what he has done to grow our beloved sport. Kyle was a beam of light at every gathering… his enthusiasm, kindness, and creativeness was contagious.

Let us pray that Kyle is in a better place.

Closing out the semester the right way.

This week our students are wrapping up research presentations on their manufacturing topics, putting the final touches on everything they’ve learned and built along the way.

Graduation is set for Saturday, finals are just ahead, and this group is ready.

Another strong class of Vincennes University Precision Machining students heading out into the workforce and the next chapter.
