UVU-based Center for Constitutional Studies at UVU held its first out-of-state civics training May 27 for 26 Kโ€“12 teachers at UCCS.

Funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant, the instruction and discussion on the Declaration of Independence and Constitution provided resources for teachers to better teach about the American founding in the classroom.

โ€œThis is Washington. Every time you think he is out, he has that resilience to come back. Without him, we would not have won the American Revolution, and we probably would not have formed a long-standing republic.โ€

So said award-winning historian and podcast guest Nathaniel Philbrick on the premiere episode of the newest season of ๐™๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ.

He and host ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ป discuss the role of George Washington and maritime tactics, and they explore many of the most pivotal moments during the years of the Revolutionary War and why Washington meant so much to the winning effort.

"Independence Hall is one of the most powerful spaces I know. It has both an elegance and a simplicity that I have always felt captures something important and tangible about the intellectual world of the American Founding," wrote ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ, of Pembroke College, Oxford, in a May 26 Deseret News opinion.

"Standing in [that space], one is reminded that in contrast to the proclamations issued in the name of a monarch or his military and civilian representatives, Americaโ€™s texts have been, from their very beginning, drafted by committees and have drawn their power and authority from processes ofโ€”at their bestโ€”sober and careful deliberation."

First observed as Decoration Day in 1868 and officially named Memorial Day by Congress in 1971, this day honors those in the U.S. Armed Forces who have given their lives in fulfilling their oath to โ€œsupport and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.โ€

On Memorial Day, flags are flown at half-staff (half-mast at sea) from sunrise until noon and then raised to full staff for the remaining hours of daylight.

The Center for Constitutional Studies at UVU salutes these fallen heroes, their families, and their descendants.

"While Americans spend a great deal of time arguing over the principles of equality, representative government, and the God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, we spend precious little time in our educational system learning about them," wrote ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ป in a May 19 Deseret News piece.

"A parent decides to take a more active role governing his nearly grown son, who has enjoyed too much independence over the past 150 years. The son reacts poorly, ultimately cutting ties with home . . . . That, in a nutshell, is the story of the American Revolution."
