Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences has named Dr. Amanda S. Hering as the new chair of the Department of Statistical Science, effective Sept. 14th.

A Baylor alumna and professor of statistical science, Hering joined the Baylor faculty in 2016 and has built an accomplished career applying statistical methods to complex challenges in engineering and the environment.

Her work has also included leading Baylor’s efforts within the Department of Energy’s $100 million National Alliance for Water Innovation.

In one week, the Baylor community will come together at McLane Stadium to remember the lives lost on September 11th, 2001, and honor the first responders who courageously answered the call.

Hosted by Baylor Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC, the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb invites participants to climb in remembrance of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The event is free and open to the Baylor community, with check-in beginning at 5:30 a.m. and step-off at 6 a.m.

Meet Cara Salazar, a first-year Biology major from Sugar Land, TX, with plans to become a family physician and one day run a practice of her own.

Cara chose Baylor for the community, and she’s already got one major item on her Baylor bucket list: running the Baylor Line at every home game her freshman year. 🏃‍♀️🏈

When she’s not studying for her future in medicine, you might find Cara creating digital art and designing stickers or rewatching Pitch Perfect, her pick for the feature film of her first year.

Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Ford, professor of English in the Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences, on receiving the 2026 Eudora Welty Prize for her new book, "Of Women and Water: Submersion Stories in Eudora Welty’s Fiction."

Awarded by Mississippi University for Women and the University Press of Mississippi, the Eudora Welty Prize recognizes exceptional scholarship in Women’s Studies, Southern Studies or Modern Letters.

As this year’s recipient, Dr. Ford will also be invited to present her work at the Eudora Welty Symposium this fall.

One Month Away! On Oct. 1st, Baylor welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author Annette Gordon-Reed for the 2026 Beall-Russell Lecture in the Humanities.

In “The Story of Our Founding, and Its Impact for Us Today,” Gordon-Reed will explore America’s founding and how the stories we tell about our history continue to shape our nation today.

A $30 million collaboration is bringing Baylor astrophysicists to the forefront of turbulence research 🌌 🔬

Baylor University astrophysicists Dr. Lorin Matthews and Dr. Truell Hyde are joining researchers nationwide in TEMPEST, a new National Science Foundation-funded center advancing the study of turbulence.

Bringing Baylor’s expertise in dusty plasma research to a collaboration spanning eight universities and five national laboratories, their work could have implications from fusion energy and hypersonic flight to the formation of planets and stars.
