We had a great dinner last Sunday to celebrate the year and honor the graduating seniors. A big thanks to Xiao Shi, An Dau, and Elayne Allen for all their contributions to Civitas over the past year. We're especially grateful for Elayne's leadership as president of the organization for the past two years. We wish each of you all the best in your future endeavors!

Looking forward to what next year brings! Have a great summer!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our officer-led panel discussion yesterday on the past, present, and future of feminism. Some of the issues we touched on were the three waves of feminism, defining the modern feminist movement, intersectionality, the compatibility of feminism and Christianity, and the role of the movement in addressing issues of women's health and rights around the world. While we didn't leave with any easy answers, our conversation made some real headways and raised important questions about this very relevant--and complex--topic. Thanks for all your contributions!

Stay tuned for information about our last official meeting of the semester next Tuesday!

We had a great meeting last Tuesday-- Dr. David Corey delivered his paper entitled “The Paradox of Rule in American Politics" about the failures and ways forward for our current model of politics and the paradoxical nature of rule as both necessary and illegitimate.

We also held elections for our officer positions next year. Congratulations to our incoming President Joseph De Mond and
Officers Kendall Curtis, Jeffrey Wang, Charlie Emmett, and Joseph Clarkson. A special thanks goes to Elayne Allen, who has served as Civitas president this year and will be graduating in May.

We hope everyone has a safe and restful Easter Break!

Thanks again to Xiao for leading a discussion on the modern history of China and the potential role for western liberal democracy in its future. Here's a photo of some of our members who stuck around after the meeting for extra discussion.

This Tuesday, we will compete against each other in a fun current events quiz and afterwards discuss different sides of several hotly debated issues. Look for further details in an email that will be sent out soon. See you then!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our discussion with Arthur Milikh about art and civic life--it was a great success!

Also, a reminder about our weekly meeting this afternoon: Xiao will be leading a discussion about the role Western democracy should play in China. You won't want to miss it!

Thanks to Kenzie for leading a great discussion yesterday on some of the challenges/problems of the American criminal justice system. The discussion highlighted a number of important issues, such as the connection between mass incarceration and racial inequalities as well as the ethical implications of private prisons and prisoner labor. We ended the conversation by coming up with practical steps we can take as citizens to make a difference in these problems.

It was great to have Dr. Tran from the Baylor Religion department/Honors Residential College come to speak with us on Tuesday about making sense of the American political and religious landscape after the election of President Trump. Dr. Tran spoke about the failures of the right and the left, and presented a thought provoking alternative to conventional politics through the Church. It was certainly a timely and challenging conversation for all of us.
