Southern Union’s Technical Division recently celebrated the graduation of our latest Skills for Success: Facilities Maintenance Academy!

Over the course of two weeks, students received hands-on training from community professionals in areas such as customer service, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing, gaining valuable skills to enhance their future in facilities maintenance.

Students also completed resumes, toured Auburn University Facilities Management and met with several employers who were eager to hire them for entry-level facilities maintenance positions.

We’re proud to provide these opportunities that prepare our students for real-world success and strengthen our local workforce.

Southern Union was honored to welcome renowned meteorologist James Spann to our Wadley Campus for an engaging and impactful discussion on weather safety.

Our students greatly enjoyed hearing from Mr. Spann, who has long been a trusted voice in weather communication and student safety across Alabama.

Southern Union State Community College was deeply honored to host the Alabama legislative delegation that serves our college area for the Annual Legislative Luncheon, held on our Opelika Campus in partnership with the Opelika Chamber of Commerce. This meaningful event provided an opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for the continued leadership, vision, and advocacy of those who work tirelessly to strengthen education and workforce development across our state.

We were proud to welcome and recognize the following members of our delegation:

- Senator Randy Price – District 13
- Senator Jay Hovey – District 27
- Representative Bob Fincher – District 37
- Representative Joe Lovvorn – District 79
- Representative Chris Blackshear – District 80
- Representative Ed Oliver – District 81
- Representative Pebblin Warren – District 82
- Representative Jeremy Gray – District 83

Each of these leaders plays an essential role in shaping policies that create opportunities for Alabama students and ensure community colleges like Southern Union continue to thrive.

We were also honored to hear from ACCS External Affairs representative Boone Kincaid, who delivered a powerful message highlighting the unwavering support our legislators provide to Alabama’s community college system – a system that continues to change lives every day through education, training, and opportunity.

A special highlight of the event was the recognition of Mr. Gary Fuller for his more than 20 years of dedicated service to the City of Opelika and his steadfast support of Southern Union. We are truly grateful for his leadership and the lasting impact he has made on our community. We are also thrilled to welcome incoming Mayor Smith and are proud to honor the legacy of excellence and commitment that Mr. Fuller leaves behind.

We were equally inspired by Southern Union HVAC alumnus Forrest Harmon, who now owns and operates a successful HVAC company. Forrest’s journey is a shining example of how community colleges empower students to turn their dreams into reality and how the dedication of our legislative partners makes those stories possible.

Southern Union extends heartfelt thanks to our delegation, Mayor Fuller, Mayor Smith, the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, and all who make it possible for us to continue serving as a cornerstone of education, innovation, and community in East Alabama.
