⚠️ Freezing Rain Expected — Plan Ahead ⚠️

Freezing rain is expected across central North Carolina, creating dangerous travel conditions and the potential for power outages due to ice accumulation on roads, trees, and power lines.

🧊 Why freezing rain is dangerous:
• Creates invisible ice (black ice) on roads and sidewalks
• Makes travel hazardous or impossible
• Can lead to downed trees and power outages

🕒 What to do now:
✔️ Avoid unnecessary travel
✔️ Charge phones and devices
✔️ Prepare for possible power outages
✔️ Stay informed with the latest forecasts

📆 Winter Storm Planning Timeline ❄️🌨️

Heads up! A winter storm is approaching, and now is the time to plan ahead. Here’s the timeline of what to expect — and when to take action — for central North Carolina:

🗓 Friday (Today):
• Latest briefing shows sleet and freezing rain expected this weekend with hazardous travel conditions beginning soon.
• NOW is the time to gather supplies, charge devices, and check your emergency kit.

📆 Saturday (Storm Onset):
• Wintry precipitation likely starts late Saturday — brief snow possible near the VA border before quickly switching to sleet and freezing rain.
• Roads will become slick and dangerous Saturday evening.
• Prepare for ice accumulation, fallen tree limbs, and possible power outages.

📆 Sunday (Peak Impacts):
• Continued freezing rain, sleet & icy conditions with major impacts possible.
• Hazardous travel and risk of power outages remain high.
• Don’t travel unless absolutely necessary.

📆 Sunday Night → Monday:
• Black ice will remain a concern into early next week — even after the storm officially ends.
• Bitterly cold temperatures likely, with wind chills dropping near or below zero.

🛑 Take Action NOW:
✔️ Stay informed with updates from National Weather Service Raleigh
✔️ Charge phones & devices
✔️ Stock food, water, medications & supplies
✔️ Plan for staying home safely through the storm and recovery period

🌪️ Hurricane Categories 101 🌀
Category 1 = 74–95 mph winds
Category 2 = 96-110mph winds
Category 3 = 111-129mph winds
Category 4 = 130 - 156mph winds
Category 5 = 157mph+ winds

But any category can knock out power, flood streets, and close campus. Don’t wait for a Cat 5 to take it seriously.
