Podcast Summary: To Pay or Not to Pay

In the third episode of RU Sports Speaks Lorenzo Robinson and Nevarie Solomon sit down with Reinhardt University’s football players Teon Burroughs, PJ Williams, and Billy Waters, who also practices track and field, to discuss if college athletes should be paid or not. There is a lot of talks out there about this issue because a college athlete has so much on their plate. They have to balance going to classes, getting homework done, going to work, and keeping high performance at their sport. We all know college is expensive and sometimes it would be nice if athletes got paid. Teon starts off this discussion and says he believes college athletes should be paid. He thinks a college athlete has so many responsibilities and things to take care of that getting paid for practicing your sport would solve many problems. Lorenzo, Nevarie, PJ, and Billy all agree on this subject also because of the same reasons and because not everybody can support themselves. Next, Nevarie asks a follow-up question and that is: do you think if athletes get paid, would that take away the purity of the sport? Everyone agrees on this question as well. Teon believes the purity and the motives of the game would change. People would no longer be practicing hard for the same reason anymore, and that is to win as a team. Athletes would no longer feel like there is a grind and the intensity of the workouts could lower. Then, Nevarie jumps in and asks if college athletes get paid, how would that work? Everyone comes to the conclusion that everybody on the roster should be paid no matter what, but they should not be all paid the same. Higher salaries should be given to those who have a better performance or do good in their academics. Later, they switch gears and have a rich and entertaining discussion on who is the best quarterback in the NFL and their top five. In this talk, everyone jumped in with their opinions and thoughts of each player’s ability, performance, and achievements. They also had this same talk with who is their top pick for 2021 NFL MVP and closed the episode by thanking our audience for listening to us.

Podcast Summary: What is Your Motivation?
In the second episode of RU Sports Speaks Lorenzo Robinson and Nevarie Solomon sit down with Reinhardt University’s football players Markell Sutton and Kellen Neal to discuss what is their motivation to continue to execute their sport at a high-level performance and what keeps them going. Everybody has something or someone who inspires an athlete to play their sport they love and pushes them to persevere. For Markell, his mother was the one who introduced him to football by signing him up to a football program nearby where he lived but did not like it at first. However, his mother kept signing him up every year until he started liking it. On the other hand, Kellen grew up watching his older brothers play sports. He started by trying out baseball and basketball but quit after a few years. Then, he was introduced to football and liked it more. Both Markell and Kellen feel like they still have a passion for their sport. What keeps Markell going is that he has been playing since he was little and feels like there is no need to stop now. He feels like football is a part of his life and does not know what he would do without it. He also says he wants to make a name for himself. Nevarie jumps in and relates how he has been playing football from a young age as well. He has always had love and passion for the sport. What motivates Nevarie to keep playing is that for him, football is like an outlet where he lets out a lot of aggression. For Lorenzo, he grew up playing more basketball and got into football later. His motivation to keep playing is the scholarship he has, which helps him pay for school. Then, Lorenzo asks everyone if they feel like playing their sport feels like a job, to which Markell replies by saying that it felt like a job when he entered college because they had a strict routine that he was not used to. Kellen does not feel like it is a job, and neither does Nevarie because it helps him clear his mind and have fun. Next, Nevarie asks if they adapted quickly to collegiate football or did it take time. Markell relates that it was a crazy experience. Waking up early was not hard for him since he was used to it, but the intense practices were. For Kellen, he had to adapt to the “You are no longer the best player” mindset and realize that everyone is as good as him. Nevarie could relate to this; he feels that everybody in college is good because they are there for a reason. Next, Lorenzo switches the conversation and asks who is the greatest basketball player of all time, to which they all say that Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player. Then, they have a brief discussion about the NFL Draft and who will win the Super Bowl.
