When the American Civil War began in 1861, Clara Barton felt called to serve her country by bringing front line aid to Union soldiers who were wounded in battle.
Her heroic efforts during the war earned her the nickname "Angel of The Battlefield".
Barton founded the American Red Cross in May of 1881. Thanks in large part to Clara's adcovacy, the following year the United States ratified the Geneva Conventions, and later officially recognized the American Red Cross services.
Her words in this letter perfectly exemplifies who Clara was; a selfless individual who understood that aiding your fellow man is not simply a duty, but a privelage.
