Marla McLeod's exhibition is open to the public through Oct 29!

“We the People (Our Love Will See Us Through)” touches on the diversity of Marla McLeod’s practice, juxtaposing larger-than-life portrait painting with handmade textiles and garments. The exhibition explores the false and pervasive narratives surrounding Black bodies, while re-presenting the historical figures and characterizations of James Baldwin, W.E.B. Du Bois, and the harmful stereotype of the “mammy.” “We the People” populates the gallery and collective imagination with updated historical representations of the figures, featuring pronounced symbols of pride for Black Americans.

Gallery hours Tuesday / Thursday / Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Gallery appointments are encouraged, email Susan Metrican: [email protected]

All guests visiting the campus are required to follow Brandeis' COVID-19 guidelines, including a completed Daily Health Assessment.

Thank you Laura Mandel and Jewish Arts Collaborative for the mention! They're beginning a new blog series called Art D'var, and Tamar Paley is among the first to be featured. Paley was the 2018 HBI Artist at the Kniznick Gallery.

"When I think of the physical display of Jewish tradition in a modern context, I think of artist Tamar Paley’s conceptual jewelry. Tamar, born in Jerusalem in 1991 to American parents, has been inspired by Jewish religious text, the nature of Israel and more to lead to the many forms that her beautiful conceptual jewelry takes. One of her collections from 2017, called “A Fringe of Her Own,” a collection of ritual objects for women, specifically shows a modern look at male dress ritual objects reimagined for women."
