“My name is Nikita Mangaru (she/her/hers) and I am currently a sophomore at Brandeis planning on majoring in HSSP and Business with a minor in Anthropology. I am a first-generation, bisexual, Guyanese-American. I was born in New York, but I was raised in Atlanta. However, I am no stranger to Massachusetts, since I went to boarding school in Western Mass for 6 years. My big three are Ta**us Sun, Cancer Moon, and Leo Rising. With that combo, I am sure you can imagine that I am super extroverted, so you can always catch me hanging out or talking to somebody.

P.S. This is a sneak peak of a future insta post, so follow me.”

“Hi! I’m Maristella Tojong, I go by she/her pronouns, and I’m from Portland, Oregon. I’m a junior studying Health: Science, Society, and Policy (HSSP) and Psychology. Currently, I work at the Brandeis COVID-19 Testing Site and besides the MLK Fellows Advisory Board, I’m also the Vice President and Digital Media Chair for Brandeis’ Southeast Asia Club. I love our MLK Fellows community and am super excited to meet the new class of MLKs next semester!”

“Hello! :) My name is Jennifer Aguilera and I am a senior at Brandeis. I am majoring in psych and minoring in Latin American studies. I also really love anthropology and have been able to conduct a lot of research centering the voices of those not often heard. On campus, I am the Co-President of the Brandeis Latinx Student Organization along with another MLK Fellow!

My family migrated from Mexico and I grew up in Waukegan, Illinois. In my free time, I love spending time outside in greenery, listening to music (can’t focus without it) and playing with my German Shepherd and two kitties!”

“My name is Rumbi, and I’m a junior. I’m from MA, but my family and I are originally from Zimbabwe, Africa. I am double majoring in Health, Science, Society and Policy (HSSP) and Biology on the BS track. I am also minoring in Women and Gender Studies. Post Brandeis, I plan to go to PA school in hopes of becoming an OBGYN. I’m very friendly, so don’t be afraid to say hi if you see me on campus! :)”

・・・
Happy National First-Generation College Student Day! November 8th was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Today is an opportunity to honor first-generation students on our campus and celebrate their many successes.

Our office wants to highlight some of the opportunities that might be of particular interest
to first-generation college students.
In our role as Fellowships Advisors, we enjoy supporting students as you design research projects, explore opportunities beyond the classroom, and learn to write compelling and concise narratives in the forms of personal statements and application essays. Regardless of the final outcome, the application process provides helpful reflective writing tools to visualize your future trajectory, define the necessary steps to achieve those dreams, and own the power of your story. Whether you want to run for office, provide public health services, serve as an educator, start a non-profit, or build community through art, we want to help you take the next steps to achieve your goal. We are here to listen, to support, and to uplift.
Today we wanted to highlight some of the many opportunities that might be of particular interest to those who are the first in their family to attend college. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] to learn more about the ways we can support you.
