It was our last day in Chile and we made it count! We explored the gorgeous city of Valparaiso, took one last pic with the Pacific Ocean, and made a quick stop off at a vineyard on our way to the airport. We packed it in! Headed home with lots of memories and many ponchos.

Today was our last day in the south of Chile and our last day with our Mapuche hosts. We wrapped up with a hike, through which we saw the Araucania region through the eyes of Chile’s Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, who grew up in the area. We are grateful to the Llaguepulli community for their amazing hospitality. Now on to the beach!

Goodbye busy Santiago, hello Chilean countryside. We’ve spent the past two days in the Llaguepulli community on beautiful Lake Budi living with and learning from Native American Mapuche people. Lectures on traditional medicinal practices, Mapuche spirituality and worldview, cooking classes, introduction to weaving, a boat ride on the lake to learn about traditional Mapuche fishing and farming, and even a ride in an ox-drawn cart. It’s been a full two days!

It’s not everyday that you get to go horseback riding AND white water rafting in the Andes Mountains. We took a break from our studies today to experience Chile’s incredibly unique landscape. For many of us, it was the first time on horseback. For some of us, it was the first time rafting. For all of us it was an unforgettable day.

Santiago is a global city, full of local charm. Today we experienced both sides of that coin by visiting three very different commercial centers. From the sale of used goods on the street, to locally grown produce and woven goods, to global imports, we saw it all. And of course, we some bought stuff too.

Today was a HOT day in Santiago! But we kept our cool by getting creative. We met with Olga Cartonera at the Santiago Library to learn about the Chilean publishing industry and its relation to the global market. Olga shared with us an alternative form of book publication known around Latin America and the world as Cartonera publishing. Together we hand-made books out of recycled cardboard trash, self publishing short stories we wrote yesterday with Chilean writer Pia Barros. Our book will be catalogued in the general collection of the Santiago Library. Thank you, Olga!

Today was another great day in Santiago. We spent the day in the home of writer Pia Barros, who spoke to us about the relationship between literature and social justice. Then Pia’s daughter, Miranda gave us a lecture on Chilean education reform. We also enjoyed a delicious lunch and playing with the family dog and cat. 😄

Today we visited multiple sites around Santiago, all of which played a major role in the country’s painful past of military dictatorship, but also in its brave effort to recuperate democracy and dignity.
