Happy National Wildflower Week! CJ, Drake, Erica, Fiona, and Leah started our efforts to establish more native wildflowers on the University of Central Missouri campus. Being perennial and drought-tolerant, these plants will provide benefits such as more color, reduced cost, food for pollinators, and carbon sequestration to name a few.

Photos before and after planting. The seedlings are tiny but will transform this area in a month and for years to come.

Happy National Learn About Butterflies Day!

Lots to learn about them, and hopefully we will learn from them as they are an important ecosystem indicator.

Congrats to Leah... just awarded third place for her UCM McNair project. Leah's project assessed roadsides (with GIS) in Missouri for potential butterfly habitat. This was followed up with butterfly surveys in roadsides this summer for her Honor's project. Results from both projects will be presented at the Entomological Society of America Conference in November (Portland, OR).

Proud to be part of a group that just put out an important message in Science. Butterflies have experienced steep population declines since 2000:
https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adp4671

Considering that 1) butterflies are used to assess ecosystem health, 2) the declines started well before 2000, and 3) most of this work is conducted on conserved lands, it sure seems life on Earth is struggling to survive. It is important to start making changes!
