🏙️ Communities are more than places. They're social systems.

From housing affordability and public transportation to neighborhood development and community well-being, sociologists bring valuable perspectives to urban planning.

Through research, community engagement, and an understanding of social inequality, sociologists can help shape how communities grow, change, and respond to the needs of their residents.

“They never told me to leave the company. I left because of my own disappointment and fatigue.”

A Black ballet dancer shared this with sociologist Sekani L. Robinson. It captures something that counting who gets into an institution can miss.

In Contexts, Robinson draws on her research and experience in ballet to examine how elite cultural institutions celebrate Black artists while still treating whiteness as the standard.

Exclusion can arrive as career advice. A talented Black ballerina is encouraged toward contemporary dance, away from the classical ballet she spent years mastering. It also appears in the practical details of performing, when costumes and pointe shoes are designed around skin tones that bear little resemblance to her own.

Over time, these encounters accumulate. The work of being a dancer includes the added strain of continually negotiating a place in the institution.

Robinson asks us to look beyond admission and representation to the conditions people encounter once they arrive. An institution can open its doors while leaving the terms of belonging intact.

What if creating equality becomes another unequal burden? And why might feeling safer from deportation have little to do with being safer?

The latest Contexts Research Briefs explore these contradictions, alongside findings on how disability shapes gender identity and why political polarization has measurable carbon costs. Other studies examine the uneven consequences of raising grandchildren, the bureaucracy behind local voting rights, and how political leaders can change behaviour without changing beliefs.

These are short reads that give us more to think about.

What happens when getting help means moving through an assembly line?

In Los Angeles County’s welfare offices, many applicants no longer have a dedicated caseworker. Their cases are divided into tasks, distributed across employees, and moved through computer systems. Someone handles each step, but no single worker follows the whole person’s situation.

In Contexts, sociologist Josh Seim examines how decades of rising demand and limited staffing transformed welfare work. Standardization can speed up access to benefits and reduce discriminatory discretion. It can also narrow the space for workers to understand needs that extend beyond the next form.

The organization of welfare work shapes what assistance can become. When success is measured by how quickly cases move, whose needs remain unresolved after the task is complete?
