For our series Summer Stories, we'll be retelling some of the little known tales of UCM and its community. Today, the story of Mildred Wright, a dancer and teacher who died in 1933. She was the first female pilot associated with the University of Central Missouri and was known for stunt flying at county fairs and flying an autogyro across New England. On July 8, 1933, Wright was flying over the Missouri River at Fairfax Airport in Kansas City when her plane stalled. She either jumped or fell from the open cockpit, only to find that her parachute would not open. She fell into the Missouri River and died, along with a local man who died in an attempt to save her. She was 29.
