Congrats Senator Jaha Howard!

Dr. Jaha Howard (BS ‘03; DDS ‘07) has accomplished a career that bridges clinical care, community service, and civic leadership. After earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Howard University, Dr. Howard went on to complete a specialty in pediatric dentistry and a master’s in oral science, later becoming a board-certified pediatric dentist dedicated to children’s health. He is the owner of A+ Pediatric Dentistry of Atlanta, where his practice provides comprehensive, affordable oral care for thousands of families, including preventive care accessible even without insurance.

Beyond his work as a healthcare provider, Dr. Howard has been deeply engaged in public service. He served four years as an elected member of the Cobb County Board of Education, where he worked with parents, educators, and policymakers to address equity and health challenges facing students and families. Most recently, in December 2025 he won a special election to represent Georgia’s State Senate District 35, becoming a voice for his community at the state level and focusing on issues such as healthcare access, affordability, and economic opportunity for small businesses and families.

Dr. Howard’s journey from clinician and small business owner to state lawmaker demonstrates how Howard graduates bring service and leadership into every space they occupy.

A proud Howard alum, he continues the legacy of making Black history since 1867 by lifting up community health, civic engagement, and public service in Georgia.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Paul Cotton.

Dr. Cotton was a member of the wrestling team in the 1980s and later served as head coach. He continued his service to the University as a member of the Board of Trustees and was widely regarded as an unofficial but deeply respected historian of Howard and its sports traditions.

Beyond Howard, Dr. Cotton distinguished himself nationally through a career in public service. Most recently, he served as director of the Office of Extramural Research Activities at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, advancing research that improves health outcomes for under-resourced communities.

He was a member of the Howard Athletics Hall of Fame, an active member of Bison Express, a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and a friend and mentor to many.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Cotton’s family, friends, colleagues, former student-athletes, and all those whose lives were touched by his wisdom, generosity, and enduring spirit.

We will recognize Dr. Cotton with a moment of silence during Saturday’s basketball doubleheader vs. Norfolk State.
