In partnership with Union Market District, Gallaudet University y Nuestra Casa presents Maria Barinas de Leger Solo Exhibition which has opened on January 12 and runs until February 29, 2024.

Check out a selection of Maria's amazing portfolio of works on display at the Balcon at La Cosecha at 1280 4th Street NE, Washington DC 20002.

María Barinas de Leger, deaf artist, was born in the Dominican Republic and emigrated to the United States at the age of 7. She has been creating art her whole life, with recognition as an award winning child artist even when she was unable to attend the local schools in Santo Domingo due to being deaf. She specializes in landscapes, portraits, and still life, most often working with oil paint depicting life in little moments. Some paintings in this exhibition display life in the Dominican Republic or life in New York City/Connecticut with her children. Others are paintings from her imagination or experiments in artistic style.

It took me only a year and half to make this mural happen. It was such a pleasure to work with Yiqiao Wang and Union Market District from the conceptual phase to the installation phase.

Located on the west side wall of Union Market on 5th street.

“Deaf AAPI Experience”

Deaf artist Yiqiao Wang’s artwork celebrates the multicultural spirit of American Sign Language. This mural also represents the pride and heritage of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) deaf communities and their contributions to society. On the left wall, the signs “EQUALITY” and “INCLUSION” are portrayed while on the right wall, an Asian-American Deaf woman signs “ASIA”. The mural’s bright and bold colors symbolize the vibrancy of AAPI culture, and incorporates iconic landmarks of Washington— a city where the deaf community is well represented and this mural reminds people that the deaf community is not monolithic. This mural serves as a message that equality and inclusion are important in removing the invisibleness of the AAPI deaf community, historically underrepresented by society, and is a call to action to see and understand them.

A secondary goal of this mural is to promote awareness about Gallaudet University and the deaf community and its place within the neighborhood.
