Each Spring, students from our DSAN 5300: Statistical Learning core class present their research in a poster session. The opportunity to work together, explain their research, and present a poster that balances visuals and text is invaluable to our students as they close out their first year at DSAN!

On Thursday, DSAN's Digital Storytelling class had a special guest, Una, Heather Connor's pup (and un-offical DSAN Mascot)!

First-year students Kylie and Danielle had the creative idea to include Una when Professor Irina tasked the class with improving a past presentation, and converting it into a poster-style presentation with an interactive component. Dr. Irina shared that, "the creativity our students bring to their projects truly reflects how DSAN empowers them to think outside the box and fully embrace their bold ideas—very important for future leaders".

From Kylie and Danielle: "We used one of Danielle’s past DSAN presentations, where she and her group investigated the socioeconomic qualities of dog ownership in New York City. It was originally a 30-slide presentation, and we converted it to a single poster that highlighted their key findings. One of those findings is that income is a large driver for what kind of dog someone owns in NYC.

For our interactive component, we asked audience members to guess where a dog like Una might live if she was from New York City, given her size and breed. At the end of the presentation, we provided a QR-code to a website where they could enter her size and breed information, and see which NYC borough she is most characteristic of. We found out that mixed breed, medium dogs like her are most popular in the Bronx!
