HISTORY + ANTHROPOLOGY = now one department, stronger together!

To our students, alumni, and friends:

As of 1 July 2025, the Department of History and the Department of Anthropology at The Catholic University of America have joined forces to become the new Department of History and Anthropology. We believe that this will create exciting opportunities for collaboration, in areas ranging from cultural heritage, to archaeology and material history, to infusing information technology into our courses in innovative ways.

We would like to emphasize that this does not entail any changes to the academic programs of both former departments: the undergraduate majors and other programs in History and Anthropology will continue, as will our ongoing engagement (digital and otherwise) with our respective alumni bases. We look forward to continuing to share our news and developments with you!

Department Chair Árpád von Klimó adds: “As its first chair, I am very optimistic about the future of our new department. We will not only continue to provide the best of our disciplines in research, teaching, service, and learning, but we also look forward to developing new avenues of cooperation.”
