What happens when repeated hits to the head become a lifelong health risk?

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with repeated impacts to the head. It has been found in athletes across sports including football, hockey, rugby, soccer, wrestling and bobsledding as well as in people with repeated blast exposure.

A recent analysis found that 24.5% of 878 NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE. Researchers caution that the prevalence may be higher, and the strongest predictor of CTE appears to be the cumulative force of head impacts over a lifetime. CTE can be associated with memory loss, confusion, changes in mood and behavior, and declines in executive function.

David Michaels, a professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, noted the significance of degenerative neurological diseases like CTE and the broader threats posed by occupational health conditions, in a recent article in New York Times.

Understanding the long-term effects of repeated head impacts is critical to preventing brain injury and protecting athletes throughout their lives.
