Today, we join communities around the globe in recognizing , established by the United Nations to honor the courage and resilience of those forced to flee their homes. 🌍

We’re proud to highlight Noon Elmostafa (MIMR’27), who is spending her in Nairobi, Kenya, as an intern with the International Organization for Migration (IOM - UN Migration) within the Labour Mobility and Migrant Protection Unit in fulfilment of the practicum requirement of SFS’s Master of Arts in International Migration and Refugees program (Institute for the Study of International Migration).

Elmostafa supports labour mobility and migrant protection initiatives by managing case files, documenting trafficking trends and coordinating stakeholder workshops. Her practicum also provides exposure to migration governance and Kenyan border projects. Through this experience, Elmostafa is learning to balance idealism with pragmatism while bridging theory and practice in human mobility.

“When education is placed in service of something larger than itself, when it is brought into contact with lived realities, with communities, with the full weight of human need, it becomes transformative. Because true global change can only occur through truly witnessing, and this often happens one person, one relationship and one act of service at a time,” she says.

Peer Khan (SFS’27) is a 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar spending his here in Washington, DC, interning in The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Global Engagement and Strategy. In his role, he assists in the U.S. government’s preparations for hosting the in 2026, followed by the G7 summit in 2027. 🌐

The Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) empowers exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, helping them build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. From drafting memos on multilateral economic issues to researching key economic issues on the G20 policy agenda, Khan has gained first-hand insight into the inner workings of multilateral economic diplomacy.

“It's very easy to think that only a secretary or cabinet official would be able to make these types of decisions, but my internship experience has shown me just how impactful everyday civil service really is and has made me even more excited to contribute to that impact in the future,” Khan says.

Luke Hughes (SFS’27) reflects on his experience in Jakarta, where he spent two weeks conducting field research for his undergraduate thesis on sustainability in Indonesia’s blue swimming crab industry. Supported by Georgetown SFS faculty and the Georgetown SFS Asia Pacific team, Hughes engaged with local fishing communities, interviewed stakeholders across the supply chain and gained firsthand insight into one of the world's most important fisheries.

The World Bank Group’s 2026 Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE), focused on “Jobs for the Next Generation,” will take place June 16-17 in Washington, DC.

This year’s program features Georgetown experts including SFS Dean Joel Hellman, Professors Steve Radelet, Charles Udomsaph and Thomas Banchoff, as well as Lisa Singh, director of the Massive Data Institute (MDI) in the McCourt School of Public Policy - Georgetown University.

As AI reshapes the job market, Georgetown is expanding coursework and resources to help students develop both technical expertise and the ethical leadership skills needed to navigate its impact. Sabrina Gomez (SFS’27), a science, technology and international affairs major, has explored the intersection of AI, policy and ethics through courses examining issues such as bias, fairness and the use of AI in healthcare, criminal justice and national security.

On this (Georgetown University) we’re spotlighting students from the “Japan in Korea, Korea in Japan” Centennial Lab.

Last month, SFS Professor Christine Kim led students through both South Korea and Japan to examine the social, cultural and political history of their bilateral relations. The group visited various historical sites, including the island of Tsushima, a vital link between the two nations often called “ground zero” for their shared history.

Amanda Bell (SFS’28), a culture and politics major at SFS, was drawn to the course to study historical memory and colonial narratives. She valued examining how Korea and Japan’s past is depicted through museums and monuments in both nations.

“It’s one thing to read about history in articles and books. It’s a completely different thing to visit sites of historical importance and investigate what is said—and, more importantly, what is not said—about the key events that brought us to where we are today,” Bell says.
