On Tuesday, November 15th, 2022 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm EST online Georgetown University Linguistics will host Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko for a conversation on "Ukrainian Literature in Times of War." This is part of "Understanding and Including Forced Migrants and Refugees: Responses from the Humanities," which showcases work on forced migration that addresses the social, moral, aesthetic, and linguistic experiences of refugees and migrants.

Oksana Zabuzhko is an award-winning Ukrainian novelist, poet, and essayist who focuses on national identity and gender. Her first novel, Fieldwork in Ukrainian S*x, is considered one of the pivotal texts in post-Soviet Ukrainian literature. Controversial and pioneering, it denounces man-woman relationships that reaffirm traditional patriarchal roles and subject women to social and sexual oppression as the equivalent of totalitarianism. Zabuzhko’s second novel, The Museum of Abandoned Secrets, addresses Ukraine’s opposition to the 20th-century Soviet regime, debunking the myth of the «friendships of nations» that endured in Putin’s Russia. Among her non-fiction books is Notre Dame d’Ukraine, centered around the fin-de-siècle Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrayinka but also showing the role of the European legacy in Ukrainian literature and culture at that time.

The event will take place via Zoom and you can register here:

New Spring 2022 semester course on Perfroming LGBTQ+ History!

This course explores creative approaches to the theatrical adaptation and embodiment of historical LGBTQ+ materials. Students are invited to serve as artist-investigators who research, adapt, and perform in short theatre works born verbatim from the oral histories and archival documents of real-world LGBTQ+ activists, change-makers, and allies. The course is offered to beginners and those with experience! More info can be found on MyAccess and if you have any questions, email professors Michael T. Williams or Sivagami Subbaraman.
