For Samantha Hamilton, CAS-SPA/BA ’22, city streets are her canvas. 🎨 While still an AU student double majoring in art history and political science, Hamilton began working at Chalk Riot, a DC-based public art company, where she is now project manager and lead muralist.

“There’s so much pavement—it’s gray, drab, car-oriented,” she said. “It’s exciting when art can be used to reclaim that space.” The projects closest to Hamilton’s heart are those that help improve road safety—like the “traffic-calming” road murals and curb extensions in DC’s Chinatown neighborhood that encourage drivers to slow down and secure safe passage for pedestrians.

Today, she leads efforts to install about 40 commissioned public art projects around the world each year—bringing the curb appeal anywhere from Wisconsin to Brazil. Read more:

Where experimentation and collaboration transform into published music: Meet the AU Songwriters' Hub 🎧🎤

Part of the Department of Performing Arts' Music Program, this course provides an outlet for students to explore popular genres, find their sound, and grow alongside fellow musicians. Students in the Songwriters' Hub can access rehearsal space, audio equipment, and instruments for their craft while fulfilling degree requirements.

The American University Music Program also launched a new BA in Popular Music Performance and Enterprise in fall 2025, designed for students like those in the Hub with a strong interest in commercial and popular music.
