Webb telescope update!

From the moment NASA's James Webb Space Telescope launches, and through the first six hours of flight, five different telecommunications networks located strategically around the world will hand off command and telemetry data to keep Webb’s controllers in touch with their spacecraft. The mission recently completed a successful test of communications handoffs between these networks.

After six hours, Webb will be about halfway to the Moon and six times farther from Earth than the geosynchronous Earth orbit where NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite fleet and many communications satellites dwell. When the telescope reaches its destination, it will be nearly a million miles from Earth and will depend on NASA’s three Deep Space Network centers around the globe.

Fight the : The tax bill passed by the House of Representatives threatens to devastate graduate education by reclassifying tuition waivers as taxable income--a move that, if it becomes law, would result in an untenable financial burden for many graduate students. The Senate is pushing to pass its version of a tax plan, possibly as soon as this week, and grad students and supporters across the country are uniting in a walkout tomorrow to urge Senators to fight these provisions. I want to thank Prof. Cecilia Chirenti from the Center for Mathematics, Computation and Cognition of UFABC (the Federal University of the ABC Region in the metropolitan area of São Paulo), in Brazil for giving a talk yesterday here at Howard and talking with students and faculty in the lab! Her talk was on gravistars and she was addressing the question if they are viable alternatives to black holes.
