RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY:

Are you a parent of a deaf teen? My name is Holly Salem, and I am a doctoral student in Gallaudet’s Clinical Psychology Program. I am currently seeking parents who have children who are deaf (ages 12 to 18) to participate in my research about how parents communicate with their deaf adolescents about s*x. My goal is that this research will inform parents, professionals, and teachers about the special skill sets and needs of this unique population and their families. Gallaudet University Psychology Department's Colloquium Series and APA Division 22 Rehabilitation Psychology's SIG-Deafness are having Dr. Gabriel Lomas, Dr. Deb Guthmann, Dr. Damara Goff Paris, and Grace Lester for this fall's live webinar titled, "The Experiences of Deaf & Hard of Hearing People in the Criminal Legal System." This webinar will be hosted on Tonight, November 15, 7-8:30pm ET.

This webinar is free of cost. Eligible attendees can earn 1.5 CEs from the American Psychological Association (APA).

The language of presentation will be American Sign Language (ASL). ASL-English interpreters will be available for all attendees.

His primary role is completing court ordered psychological evaluations for defendants throughout the State of Utah, and he is heavily involved in Utah State Hospital's internship program, where he supervises predoctoral interns. He is a deaf individual himself, and grew up with deaf parents and a deaf older brother. His training first began at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. While at RIT, he also minored in deaf cultural studies, and obtained a concentration in criminal justice. He furthered his studies at Gallaudet University, where he earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology. His doctoral dissertation was focused on interactions between deaf individuals and law enforcement, and he has presented his dissertation at national conferences. Dr. Silvasi has published an article about deaf citizens' comprehension of the Miranda warnings, and has also published a book focused on deaf individuals' experiences at all phases in the criminal justice system. Dr. Silvasi's expertise is focused on forensic evaluations with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) individuals, and he has been appointed as an expert to conduct evaluations for DHH individuals outside of Utah.
