TALK Program - American University

TALK Program - American University TALK brings groups of U.S. and international students together for conversations about culture and intercultural communication. All U.S.

Some session themes include:

* cultural identity
* culture clash
* international cooking
* intercultural relationships
* cultural values

Activities and discussions are guided by TALK facilitators to ensure students have the opportunity to get to know one another, to share their own cultures, and to challenge the complexity of cultural differences within a trusted environment.

TALK is not a club but a program where the same group of students, selected through an application process, commit to an 8-week program. and international students (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in intercultural awareness and getting to know a small, diverse group of students on campus. There are no readings or assignments -- only a commitment to the program and an openness to engage in activities and discussions!

American Friends Welcome Party

American Friends is a program for International Students. It aims to partner international students with American friends in Washington, D.C. We believe that through these relationships, international students will be given the opportunity to experience parts of American culture that aren't available at college.

We will have a Welcome Party on Monday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. in McDowell Formal Lounge. At the party you will be provided dinner and information about the program. You will also have a lot of opportunity to meet American partners who are looking to befriend you!

It is all for free!

Offer for Current AU Students!

You are invited to participate in a photography project coordinated by AU's Center for Diversity & Inclusion, to be displayed at the summer undergraduate orientation program's diversity session (for new US and international students). We are looking for individuals who are willing to be photographed for a slideshow of students, staff, and faculty posing with their 6 word story and the place(s) they call home.

The 6-word story requires you to choose 6 words that pertain to your own identity; it can be a visible identity or invisible identity that someone wouldn't necessarily know about you from looking at you. For example, a colleague suggested that she could use "First in family to graduate college" or "Biker, Runner, Repair Woman, NoTV." The point is to say something creative about yourself and to have fun. Every one of you has an interesting and multi-layered identity - this is a fun opportunity to reflect on it and choose how you would describe yourself.

The second part is for you to write the place(s) you call home and include one place at AU. For example, one person wrote "Connecticut, Boston, DC, and the Center for Diversity & Inclusion."The purpose of this photo is to showcase the diversity of "homes" the AU community has to offer.

Photographs will also be taken on Thursday April 24th between 1-5pm, room TBD and at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion's Study Break on Tuesday April 29th between 2-5pm in MGC 200. Individuals who are interested in being photographed for one of these dates must RSVP to Tracey Livingston in the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at [email protected] no later than Monday April 21. Please create your 6-word story in advance so its ready to go when we confirm your photograph appointment.

If you have any questions please email Tracey directly - [email protected].

Feel free to share this invitation with any friends who would be interested in participating.

Thank you in advance for being part of greeting the incoming class of 2018!

You're Invited:
Transforming Divides: From Bitter Debate to Better Dialogue
Sustained Dialogue Annual Conference 2014
March 7-9, 2014
Dickinson College Carlisle, PA

Rancorous national discourse has become the norm.

From the Statehouse to the dining hall, we’ve seen an inability to dialogue across difference. It has even resulted in a 16 day government shutdown. Campuses are embroiled in bitter conversations about race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and can't seem to dialogue about effective approaches to tough problems, or even sit in a room together.

Yet, we know a different reality is possible. We've seen students learn how to engage differences as strengths, form unlikely friendships, and make a positive impact on their campus. This conference will focus on how to effectively transcend these divides with effective communication across lines of difference on a multitude of issues.

We'll be joined by:

Dr. Carolyn Lukensmeyer, who is working to do what SD is doing on the national scene as Executive Director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona, a nonpartisan center for the research and advocacy of civility in public discourse.

Dr. Phil Neisser and Jacob Hess, co-authors of You're Not as Crazy as I Thought (But You're Still Wrong): Conversations between a Die-Hard Liberal and a Devoted Conservative
Dr. Harold Saunders, founder of the SD process, and a key drafter of the Camp David Peace Accords
and others who move debate about race, gender, immigration, and religion forward to dialogue.

A quick reminder to help your team begin planning, since the initial early registration deadline is Jan. 15th.
The Sustained Dialogue Conference is an unparalleled opportunity to come together as a Network and learn from student leaders, administrators, alumni, and supporters from across the country. This year’s Conference, featuring expert guest speakers from social justice, dialogue, and civic engagement fields, will energize you for a strong semester of "dialogue-to-action" and will prepare you to meet your 2014 goals.

Not doing Sustained Dialogue? You're invited too! We welcome those who are engaged in other dialogue and conflict resolution programs as well as those who are interested in starting SD in their contexts.

Register and find more information at www.sdcampusnetwork.org/conference.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. By when should I help my team register?
A. We hope that you'll register before January 15th, when rates go up, even for network members. We hope you'll use the group package to bring at least 4 nominated students and one advisor. Students likely will need help finding funding to attend. Let us know how we can support the process of getting EACH OF YOU present. Scholarships and free student lodging are available on a limited basis.

Q. Can I invite others from my campus?
A. Send this blurb out to anyone on your campus who you think would be interested, whether or not they are currently involved in SD or not. We truly welcome all. The more advocates, the better.
