This Faculty Focus Friday features Dr. Lama Elhatow, Program Coordinator and Lecturer for our MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy and MS in Energy Policy and Climate programs at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Lama answers two questions:

๐ŸŒฑ How do the MS in Energy Policy and Climate and MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy programs differ in terms of career outcomes, and how should a student decide which path aligns best with their goals?

๐ŸŒ What kinds of hands-on or experiential learning opportunitiesโ€”like field courses, research, or global experiencesโ€”can students expect, and how do those experiences translate into real impact in the climate and sustainability space?

From the opening plenary, we were reminded that restoration isn't just biology. It's culture. It's fire. It's listening.

Chief Caleen Sisk of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, .wintu.tribe, brought us back to the beginning โ€” restoring Nur (salmon) to their ancestral waters, guided by the stars and the stories that have always known the way. challenged us to think beyond rivers, to the communities whose lives are woven into every watershed. Dr. Rachel Johnson asked us to listen to the salmon themselves โ€” their life history diversity as our roadmap home. And Lenya Quinn-Davidson, , reminded us that fire, like water, is a force we must learn to work with, not against.

Thrilled to have attended a powerful gathering at the 43rd Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference, Redding, California, and if you were there, you know: this year felt different.

From the opening plenary, we were reminded that restoration isn't just biology. It's culture. It's fire. It's listening.

Chief Caleen Sisk of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, , brought us back to the beginning โ€” restoring Nur (salmon) to their ancestral waters, guided by the stars and the stories that have always known the way. challenged us to think beyond rivers, to the communities whose lives are woven into every watershed. Dr. Rachel Johnson asked us to listen to the salmon themselves โ€” their life history diversity as our roadmap home. And Lenya Quinn-Davidson, , reminded us that fire, like water, is a force we must learn to work with, not against.

Two days of workshops and field tours. A plenary that left us grounded.

Concurrent sessions that connected practitioners, biologists, tribal members, scientists, and landowners across the table.

This is the work: messy, interdisciplinary, deeply human, and utterly essential.

Look forward to sharing more about the amazing restoration work that is happening now with the and ๐ŸŸ

The planet is calling. Are you ready to answer?

Climate change. Environmental justice. Water depletion. Species extinction. These aren't distant problems โ€” they're the defining challenges of our time, and the world needs leaders who are equipped to tackle them head on.
The Johns Hopkins Environmental Sciences & Policy master's program was built for exactly this moment.

Through an interdisciplinary lens โ€” spanning science, policy, law, economics, and ethics โ€” you'll explore everything from air quality management and energy policy to GIS, oceanic stewardship, and land conservation. This is graduate education designed not just to inform, but to empower.

Welcome to DC Climate Week 2026! We have two student volunteers from our ESP and EPC programs who will be supporting us throughout our work.

Please meet Olivia Everitt. She is a student in the ESP program. She is originally from San Francisco but has loved getting to explore the DMV area recently. She currently works in the US Patent and Trademark Office and is interested in all things environmentally focused, specifically water resource science and policy.

Please also meet Colby Belmarsh. He is a student in the ESP program and is currently attending classes in addition to his job working in local parks. His interests mostly involve ecology and conservation, but he loves to learn about anything related to the environmental field of study.

We're so grateful for their support today as they help us showcase our sessions and our programs at DC Climate Week!
