Georgetown University School of Medicine has appointed Zobair Younossi, MD, MPH, as professor of medicine and founding chair of the new Global Center for Liver Outcomes and Policy Research.

Younossi is a world-renowned hepatologist who established the Global NASH/MASH Council, a network of nearly 300 hepatologists across 63 countries, and the Global Liver Registry, which has enrolled more than 18,000 patients worldwide.

He is focused on a disease often called “hidden” or silent. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease affects roughly one in three American adults, yet only about 5 percent of at-risk patients are screened in primary care. He wants that to change, so that "patients and primary care physicians are thinking about the liver the same way they think about their eyes, their heart, and their kidneys."

That focus on the whole patient runs through his career. "If the patient at the end of the day is not experiencing wellness, then you've done only half of your job."

On August 7, the School of Medicine Class of 2030 donned their white coats and recited the Hippocratic Oath, marking an important first step in their journey as future physicians.

Thank you to the School of Medicine alumni and faculty who shared notes of encouragement and words of wisdom through the Pockets of Hoya Letters initiative. These messages are a meaningful reminder to our newest medical students that they are supported by a Georgetown community that extends far beyond the Hilltop.

This summer, high school students from D.C. and Prince William County, Va. joined Georgetown's School of Medicine for the 2026 Gateway Exploration Program (GEP). Between faculty-led lectures, clinical shadowing, museum visits and mentoring sessions, these scholars performed health equity research and proposed solutions to challenges affecting their own communities.

Rama El-Munawwar, a rising senior, studied how cultural adjustment affects immigrant teenagers' mental health, drawing on her own experience moving back to the U.S. Leo Stitziel examined food deserts in D.C.'s Wards 7 and 8, motivated by his father's childhood without food security. His research found that only 11% of D.C. is classified as a food desert, yet 82% of those food deserts sit in Wards 7 and 8.

The GEP scholars shared what they learned about medicine and healthcare during the closing ceremony. As rising senior Christine Park put it, "At its core, healthcare is built on empathy, trust and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of others."

Brian Fuentes, another rising senior, summed up the experience with, "Thank you for believing in our futures and investing in us."

Over six weeks this summer, 24 U.S. undergraduates in Georgetown's ARCHES program spent more than 100 hours in immersive research with GUMC faculty, work that culminated in capstone presentations on July 24.

"This year we were fortunate to double the size of ARCHES, and with it, double the number of students who now have a real pathway into medicine," said Khaseem Davis, PhD, senior associate dean for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging at the School of Medicine. "That growth matters because access is everything."

ARCHES fellows gained research experience alongside clinical shadowing, community-based learning at local nonprofits, professional development workshops and networking opportunities. To illustrate a few experiences: Maisam Alhaj Mohammad, a Syrian refugee who grew up in Jordan, worked with Judy Wang, PhD, at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, studying aspects of breast cancer survivorship; Jefferson Vasquez-Reyes became the inaugural Davetrina Seles Gadson, PhD, Scholar and examined how where a person lives relates to stroke severity in Washington, DC; and Saniya Lewis, who first connected with Georgetown in high school through the Gateway Exploration Program, researched diet quality among women with and without HIV.

"For so many of our scholars, ARCHES is the first time someone has opened a door to research, mentorship and hands-on experience they simply wouldn't have had otherwise," Davis said.

Before their first day of class, our M1s were already showing up for the DC community.

46 incoming students spent their orientation weekend giving back — two days with 22 kids at HOYA Clinic Summer Sports Camp, hosted at The Triumph, a transitional housing facility in Southeast DC, organized by our M2s and Dr. Moore.

This camp serves as the first taste of what actually looks like in practice: showing up for the whole person. ✨

We welcomed our Class of 2030 at the White Coat Ceremony on August 7 in historic Gaston Hall. More than 200 incoming students received the coats that mark their entry into medicine.

The ceremony centered on cura personalis, care for the whole person, and the responsibility of wearing the coat. Executive Dean Norman Beauchamp, MD, MHS, told students that the coat stands as a visible pledge to their patients, colleagues, and themselves.

Each student found a handwritten note from an alum through the expanded Pockets of Hoya Letters initiative, a welcome into a community that spans generations of Hoya physicians.

The class was chosen from nearly 15,000 applicants and reflects the university's reach. California leads with 55 students, followed by Virginia with 23 and Maryland with 18, alongside classmates from New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. International students joined from Australia, China, Ethiopia, Japan, and South Korea.

Their backgrounds run wide. The cohort includes EMTs, mental health advocates, systems engineers, teaching assistants, authors, and competitive dancers who arrive with a record of service and human connection.
